This was actually a smart move for the Red Sox. The reason why is because if their starting pitcher can go 6 innings in a game, the opposing team will have to face Okajima, then Gagne, then Pappelbon in succession. I don't know about you, but that is a pretty tough bullpen that essentially lowers the other team's offensive time from 9 innings to 6. Although the better pitchers will only make vicotry sweeter for my YANKEES when we win!!!

I think the best rationale is this:
The Red Sox are going to the playoffs. It's basically a given right now.
So, what do you need to do to get ready for the playoffs? You want to improve your top four pitchers in the bullpen without harming the top four in the rotation, and help the everyday lineup if you can. The fifth starter doesn't pitch in the playoffs, and bench players only pinch hit, and only in the NL parks.
Gabbard wasn't going to pitch in the playoffs, Gagne will.
I think Gabbard will be a 3rd/4th starter type. 10-13 wins a year, maybe one or two years where he's better than that. That's worth quite a bit these days, but he's not a high ceiling prospect. I didn't really like this deal at first, but I'm warming up to it.

Basically, Lester has shown that he can be the fifth starter, with Tavarez serving as the long man. Once Schilling gets back, which will be Sunday, the rotation fills in nicely. Lester's good efforts since coming back allowed the Red Sox to deal an excess pitcher for bullpen help -- important, especially with Donnelly now out for the season.
Gagne also allows the Red Sox to give Papelbon a little extra rest, a concern with his arm problems last year.

because the Red Sox are trying their hardest to become the New Yankees. Think about it you pay JD Drew a TON of money (more than everyone on the team save for Manny), you really try hard to go after Jermaine Dye who is having one of the worst years possible, and then you trade away 3 guys just to get Gagne

If Gagne stays healthy, and it looks like he will, he is a better player than Gabbard and one of the elite relief pitchers in the game.

OK first of all i see your point, it's not uncommon to see Gagne on the DL, but they're taking that risk. Have you seen Gagne when he has his stuff working?????

I think he is a good set up man (pitches in the 8th inning when winning.) or he could be a Midddle Reliever
