The South Fork of the Elkhorn starts about 20 mi. SE of Bassett, NE, near the border of Rock and Holt Counties. The North Fork starts about 5 mi. N of Wausa, NE, near the border of Knox and Cedar County.

I see that another person answered about the Elkhorn River in the midwest. Here in California we also have an Elkhorn River (or Slough). It is an important ecological spot on the coast. The river is only 7 or 8 miles long but it was once the outlet for two rivers (Pajaro and Salinas) that now make their own way to the coast.

I think there may be others, too.
