I have a 98 Chevy Silverado, and my mechanic told me my crank shaft is going out on my truck. This will cost me several hundreds of dollars, I only have a few more months to pay off my vehicle. Should I get it fixed or try to buy another one?

Get a good salvage motor with low miles and just change it, or buy a crate motor. I'd definately fix it.

First get a second opinion and make sure the mechanic is honest, if that is really the problem then it is not just as simple as a new crank shaft, it will need all new bearings as well and so you might as well do a complete rebuild at that point, also you may not need a "new" crankshaft, just have the old one machined undersize and get undersized bearings. Anyways as long as the rest of the truck is still in good shape then I would say it is well worth fixing because then you have a new motor so it should be dependable for a long time after and if you get it done by a reputable outfit then it also adds to the resale value but right now the truck is worthless because if you hesitate to fix it and you already own if why would someone else want to buy it from you and then fix it? Good luck!

Crankshafts don't "go out". Main bearings can wear, rod bearings can wear.. If left and not fixed for a while then it can scratch up the crank journals.

The fix is cheap.. $75 max for gasket set, $65 for rod and main bearings, and $100 if you have to have the crank turned.. Plus labor if you can't do the work your self.

If it's a v8 engine, it should be the vortec 350 which is one of the best non LT/LS based engines chevy has put out in 25 years.

It depends on how much you are willing to spend and how much a new vehicle would cost. Most likely a new vehicle is gonna cost a lot more than it would be to just get it fixed, as long as the truck is decent.

10 year old truck with engine problems VS 0% loans on new Chevy's with 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. Safer better gas mileage. And Just think how great you will look in your new truck. Trade that old paint in for a new one while supplies of 2007 trucks last.

Fix it,3 or 4 payments on a new one should cover the cost.Besides you won't get much for trade in in that condition.

Get it fixed. It's a lot cheaper than a whole new truck, and it still will last a long time.
