Several players have a no trade clause in their contract.

I guess he just wanted to be a part of a winning team.

Gagne wants a chance to win a World Series, so he agreed to lift his no trade clause, so he could come to Boston (who's in 1st place) and have a chance at winning a World Series.

When you see that the club has a young closer, that could have been a major reason. And he waived the no-trade to go to the Red Sox. He possibly wanted clarification on his role with the club before accepting the deal.

because he doesnt want to have to attempt to beat out papplebon....but i dont know why he didnt use it.... it may be because the red sox are going to make it to the playoffs and the rangers arent but im not sure
