"Blinded By the Light" was released in about 1979 - Manfred Mann's Earth Band
madman drummers bummers
Indians in the summer
With a teenage diplomat
In the dumps with the mumps
As the adolescent pumps
His way into his hat
With a boulder on my shoulder
Feeling kinda older
I tripped a merry-go-round
With this very unpleasing
Sneezing and wheezing
The calliope crashed to the ground
Blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce
Another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
She got down but she never got tight
She's gonna make it through the night
Some silicone sister
With her manager mister
Told me i've got what it takes
She said i'll turn you on sonny to
Something strong
Play the song with the funky break
And go-kart mozart
Was checking out the weather chart
To see if it was safe outside
And little early pearly
Came by in her curly wurly
And asked me if i needed a ride
Mama always told me not to look into
The eyes of the sun
But mama that's where the fun is
Some brimstone baritone
Anticyclone rolling stone
Preacher from the east
Says dethrone the dictaphone
Hit it in its funnybone
That's where they expect it least
And some new mown chaperone
Was standing in the corner
Watching the young girls dance
And some fresh-sewn moonstone
Was messin' with his frozen zone
Reminding him of romance

The song was originally written and performed by Bruce Springsteen on the Greetings From Asbury Park Album in 1973. It was later covered by Manford Mann and became hit. It was also during a 3 year period where Bruce was unable to record or release any music due to a contract dispute with his original manager. Man ford Mann also had a lesser hit with another Bruce Springsteen song, I Came for You from Bruce's 2nd album The Wild The Innocent and the Estreet Shuffle. BTW E Street is in the NJ Shore town of Belmar.

There are at least two versions. Manfred Mann and the Earth Band and Bruce Springsteen. As to being a classic, well, it's OK but give me Blue Sky by the Allman Brothers or NIght Moves by Pete Seeger.

It was first recorded by Bruce Springsteen in 1973 and released only in the U.S. where it flopped. It was later recorded and ended up a number one hit for Manfred Mann's Earth Band in 1976.

Blinded by the Light was originally written and sung by Bruce Springsteen, but the version you are thinking of is by the group Manfred Mann; it is one of the few remakes that is better than the original, all props to Bruce.

Bruce Springsteen recorded it initially for his "Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J." album.
Manfred Mann's Earth Band made it an international #1 hit.
They also recorded 2 other songs from that Springsteen album, "Spirit In The Night" & "For You" which were minor hits.
