Do you need stitches? Are you sure the wound is clean? There are no bits of glass still in there, or gravel or sand, etc.?

I would take my son to the ER just to be safe. Foot infections tend to get blood poisoning, and if you're not up to date on your Tetanus shot, you'll need one of those too.

I've had all kinds of injuries through my life, most of them minor & only a few were serious enough to go to the ER (as well as with my kids), and by the way you sound it doesn't appear to be very serious.

The questions I would have asked include: Did you get all of the glass out? (evidently you did, a single 1/2-inch piece); Did it break when you stepped on it? (it went in & it came out); Do you have any pain now? (No); What did you wipe & clean the wound with? (cotton balls? gauze pads? bactine? hydrogen peroxide? alcohol?-->that'll hurt!!!); Did you put anything on it? (bandaid & neosporin?, bacitracin? bactine?, iodide?, anything?) -- all sounds good for the most part.

Just keep the area clean, change to gauze bandages & tape over a bandaid if it starts to "weep" more than a bandaid alone can hold. Any sharp pain should be investigated. It could be a little sliver of glass that broke off inside. Not to worry though, as I have found most will work their way out the next few days as you heal. Just be aware of it and look for a tiny bit sticking out of the wound - use tweezers, or if none available, use a bit of fabric gently brushed across the wound slowly to catch the galss tip and pull it out. A magnifying glass might help you find any stray pieces right now since the wound is still open.

If you start feeling any pain, do as above, or go to see the doctor (not the ER, it isn't an emergency). Same for any opaque discharge - like pus - then see the doc, it could have gotten infected and you'll need antibiotics.

Good luck & hang in there!

It will heal on its own if you take proper care of it. I've stepped on common nails all the way thru my foot and shards of glass. The nails let me tell ya, hurt worse because they are more porous or jagged the glass is sharp like a clean cut from a razor, not jagged. However, it is a puncture wound and you treat a puncture wound differently than an abrasion. Make sure that it does bleed. Because the glass has pushed the bacteria up inside your tissue, so by lots of bleeding it is washing it out of your system. Soak your foot alternately between hot and cold water. Ist 20 minutes with as hot of water as you can stand and then 20 minutes of cold water enough to s withstand. If you don't have a tetanus shot within the past 10 years, go and get one. I also think, that you not supposed to cover a puncture wound.

Ouch! You should at least have a doctor look at it & clean it. You will also need to make sure your tetanus shot is up to date.

Good luck!
