This partly a societal issue. Computers (after the microchip) was going to save us all. When they first came out society talked about the worker being able to work 35 or even 30 hour weeks because of the faster work times. Corporations saw this as a chance to make more money from workers if they continued to work 40 or 50 hours and increased the work demand.
From a personal psychological issue this has to do with priorities. Is it more important to uy your family a house with a two car garage or more important to spent time with them? Regardless of how people answer that question answer is their actions not in their words.
Older generations did work hard, my grandparents for instance had a small business (day care) and worked 12 hours a day. However, it was a family business (all their children had jobs there while going through college). So, they combined both family and profit (this isn't always possible)

today we have more things that help us to communicate with people .things to help us clean our houses better and faster ,clean our clothes better and faster. everything in our world to day is meant to make things go faster so that we can do alot more tham when our parents were younger and our grandparents were growing up. i'm 51 when i was young we didn't have computers in our homes. we didn't have microwave ovens, we didn't cell phones and pagers, we only had a few channels on t.v., when we vacuumed the carpet and the floors the machines were alot bigger and heavier than they are today. the next generation after i'm gone will be even worse than nthey are now. health problems have gotten worse as all of this has gotten faster. there's more cancer in the world ,more mental illness, more of everything that is not necessarily good.

The reason isn't based in psychology. It's based on the awareness of what we need to do in today's world in order to provide for ourselves and survive.
Well, I guess that awareness falls within the spectrum of cognitive psychology.
So the psychological reason is cognition of the tasks required for our survival.
