sounds like you have a vaccum leak.. Get some carburator cleaner and spray around your vaccum lines...around the base of your intake...and if it has a throttle body spray around the base of it. when the engine idles down you have found the source of your problem.
Hope this helps.

No, this is an idling problem. Your transmission has nothing to do with idling when in park. First, make sure your car is tuned properly, plugs, fuel filter/pump, etc. This may correct the problem. If after your tune up, the problem persists, the idle speed will have to be corrected. Depending on the model, you may or may not be able to do it yourself. Check the service manual for it and see if there is a provision for doing so. Generally, this involves using a multimeter's tach port to display idle speed and turning a Torx screw somewhere on the throttle body until you have the correct idle speed dialed in.

Please tell us what were working on Heavy truck Caterpiller front end loader Ford Chevorlet VW model an year too special info like what engine size and tidbits of information like I started to notice this engine's high idle after a buddy and I changed the coolant last weekend? 2,000 rpm's are bad if they come down in a minute two. Low coolant level can make engines idle high. Engine coolant temp sensor is not in coolant cannot read correctly. Only remove the radatior cap with the engine cold.

It appears to be a throttle system or Electronic Control Unit or sensor problem if your car uses electronic system. A proper computerised diagnostic may be needed to pinpoint the exact source.

Fast idle is not a transmission-related problem. I'd suggest you have the injectors checked, cleaned or replaced as necessary. Good luck!

No, it doesn't have anything to do with the tranny. The engine runs alone until you engage the transmission. It can be the timing, carb (if it even has one) or injectors, generator--haha or alternator, could even be the solenoid.
Sorry I may be NO help at all on this one!
