I can't deny the legendary talent that has been mentioned already but my favorite guitarist is Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave). He shows such talent, intelligence, and style that it's hard to believe he doesn't get more recognition.

Robert Johnson, even if he did get his talent by selling his soul to the devil. Seriously, if u haven't heard of him, find his music - you'll be amazed. Makes Jimi Hendrix look like a beginner. You'll also never question that rock evolved from blues after hearing him play
