Yes I believe in most states it is against the law.

It's not illegal in the US. I've checked the statutes and case law of all fifty states. Only two even mention that it should be illegal (in case holdings), but both of those are 1940s and 1950s decisions based on religious dogma -- explicitly in the text, it says that because religion forbids it that ends the debate. Those precedents would not be enforced.
Attempted suicide is illegal in some jurisdictions, because the state asserts an overriding right to control your behavior.

Wish I knew the answer. Ask the government. but seriously i do wish i knew the answer to that because they say it's a free country but how can it be if a person can't do anything to themselves. like in europe if you use, make drugs for yourself it's legal but if you sell it it's illegal. I think they throw you in jail so they make sure that they don't lose you just to get more money out of you and use it however they want not for things that are needed.

You don't get thrown in jail for attempted suicide! You get an ambulance and a free ride to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. As a member of a first aid squad, I routinely have to take these people to the hospital. As for successful suicide, I think that it's pretty hard to impose penalties for that.

Suicide is illegal because it is the killing of a person by himself and it is classified as a crime in the Penal Laws.

It's sad. For so many it's about quality of life years not quantity of life years.
If I were in a situation similar to some folks we hear about on the news, I would most definitely want the option to be left up to me and not my government.

It doesn't make sense to me either. They won't punish someone who has attempted suicide, they may try to push you into therapy, but certainly not jail (unless you were trying to kill other people in the process).

In the US, it is no longer illegal. In other countries, I have no clue. A possible justification for this is that people who fail in their attempt are psychotic and do not want them walking the streets.
