I'm at work for 9 hours of the day and my roommate is convinced that it would be cheaper to leave the air on. Which is the right plan of action? I do want to save as much money as I can and am willing to just not have the air, but my roommate won't listen unless there is some kind of proof. Help.

Since you live on the top floor, you should probably leave the windows open when youre gone and turn on the AC when your back.

Depends on how hot it gets in your area. If you leave the thermostat set on say 80 degrees or so then it will take less to cool it when you get home.

Try an experiment. Write down the reading on your electric meter in the morning when you leave. Leave the AC on. Check it again next morning. Turn the AC off while you are gone. Check it again the next morning. Now subtract the first day from the second day. Subtract the third day from the second day. Which number is higher? The lower number will tell you which way is more economical. It doesn't matter what the rate is -- if you use less electricity it cost less.

In a perfect world, you'd have the AC that has a timer/thermostat on it, where you could set the temp up to about 76 while you're gone, and then a half hour before you arrive home, it'd kick down to 72 and make it nice and cool for you when you get there.

That being said, it's best to leave it set on about 80 or so while you're gone. Do you have ceiling fans? Keep those running while you're away to circulate the air from the ceiling---box fans on the floor help, too.

leave it off while unoccupied, but leave windows open a little. as soon as you arrive, open a window, put a fan in it blowing out to exhaust the hot air and turn the AC on. leave the fan in the window until it starts to get cool around the fan, then remove & shut the window.

it is cheaper, just turn it up a few degrees when your gone. it takes more juice to bring it to temp if it has to cool the place 10 or work overtime to cool it 20. that is what the thermostat is for.
