Back a number of years ago, 3-4 It was described as deficient structural. And no one did anything about it.

How many more in this country are in this shape if not worse.

The one that comes to mind is the Memphis/ Arkansas bridge, over the Mississippi River, heavily traveled. Massive amount of big-rigs travel this interstate. People who live in Arkansas travel to Memphis everyday for work.

I would like to know its last inspection date and what were the findings?

People in Memphis wake up!!

If I had to guess, the simple answer is that the heat caused it. With cool temperatures at night (helped by cooling effect of river) and blistering temperatures at mid day, I'm sure that there was significant thermal expansion and contraction happening here. The construction work may have contributed to the collapse by debris, of the road surface, being trapped in the expansion joints. If the debris was pushed in at the peak of the contraction (cooling cycle) and blocked the movement of the expansion process, the structure could heave upward enough to separate the bridge from the foundation, and then collapse. Only one section of the bridge needed to have this failure to cause the progressive collapse that the rest of the bridge experienced.

Could a terrorist have been on the construction crew, filling the joints with debris? That' s the mystery.

We probably won't know for a few weeks how the bridget collapsed. They have to get builders, contractors, and engineers to figure it out. It is a big fear of people, to be on a bridge when it collapses. I was just on a bridge the other day, that also crosses the Mississippi River into Baton Rouge and it was bumper to bumper traffic on this 3 lane bridge. It can be very nerve racking. I hope and pray for everyone and their families.

If Dick Cheney has the capacity to demolish a bridge with civilians on it, why didnt he do the clever ingredient and demolish the headquarters of the unconventional left wing website? If there are grounds for an impeachment, a bridge collapsing isnt going to steer away from this. that's completely ridiculous.

I live about 5 miles from it.

Its probably due to the construction that has been going on since June. Its not terrorism. We probably wont know te actual cause for a while. It is the bridge that connects the University of Minnesota to downtown, so it handles thousands of vehicles daily. I am just hopping that everyone I know is okay.

I hope everyone you know is okay. It is very scary for all of us.

It looks like faulty construction. Why in all the years have we not learned how to build bridges properly? Some were built more than a century ago and are still serviceable. Perhaps its a question of cost or corner-cutting.

it broke at around 6:05 p.m., 30+ injured 15+ dead
structural failure and over use is the presumed cause of the collapse, although some are trying to pin it to alqaida,
it is a terrible trajedy, it is only 2 miles from mmy house, people were calling everyone, from coworkers to relatives to check and make sure that every one was safe.
may those that are injured have a speedy recovery, and those that are dead rest in peace.

Coverage is over the news right now!! It's just awful. I think the bridge was under construction, so maybe it was weak?? Someone else can probably give a better answer!

They were only repairing the road top not the bridge itself. To soon to know the cause of problem or number of injured. You can only watch live news coverage on FOX.

I don't have a good answer to this, but this is my first time hearing about this. Downright scary and awful! God bless anyone who might have been hurt or killed in the incident.
