the vietnam war was officially considered a "policing action" much like what we are facing in iraq. this was the first war where guerrilla tactics were used instead of it being mostly a straight fight. most of the soldiers were draftees with vey little want to be there. they were willing to give up thier lives for a cause that most of them didn't even believe in and when they returnd home these american heroes wre spit on, yelled at and many of them still suffer from ptsd today. war is hell and NO war should be liked by anyone even if they are sometimes nescassary. the simple fact is that we had no business being in the region at the time. the french had been fighting the north vietnamese for 10 years before we even came into the picture and they couldn't do any better than we did! quite simply america had never fought a war like this. in all the others it was " there is the enemy kill them". in vietnam you didn't know who the enemy was until it was too late! kids putting bombs in buildings, poisoning drinks and giving them to the troops as
'gifts" it was a bad situation no matter what side you were on.you couldn't turn your back on anyone even the ones that were supposed to be your ally.
war is hell no matter if you are winning or losing. if it wasn't there wouldn't be anything to stop us from waging it. people die on both sides. but to answer your question people hated that particular war because we had no business fighting a battle that had no ramifications on our freedoms. and many people believed that soldiers just went crazy over there and were killing innocent civillians. one of the most popular monachers for a soldier in vietnam was "baby killer". this wasn't true of course but it didn't stop the hippie movement from attacking the returning soldiers with this hate speech. unfortuanately many innocent people WERE killed in that war. they were also killed in the revolutionary war, the civil war, ww1, ww2, korea, desert storm, bosnia, etc. war is war and there will always be collateral damage thats unavoidable. in short all war is bad and should be the last resort of any nation unless they are undeniably attacked and must retaliate in defense of said nation. in vietnam we were never attacked. our government stuck our noses where it didn't belong and our troops were the ones that paid for it with thier lives.

Oh, pretty much the same reasons we hate the war in Iraq.
It started because the North Koreans were communist and the South was, or wanted to be a democratic government.. and asked for help. ( I was 10, this is from memory )
President Johnson mislead the public about an incident, and that caused an escalation. The costs were high..66 million a day in 1968 was a lot. In Dec 1969, the college draft deferments were dropped and virtually every young male in the country of draft age sat while they drew a lottery of birthdate numbers ( I remember my brother's was number 6 ). The men with the earliest numbers had no choice but to join a branch of the service or be put somewhere.
When the orders were given to bomb Cambodia, which was not part of the war at that point, there were peace rallies and even riots at colleges as protesters decried the war. I remember that clearly because I wanted to go help them protest. It was rather frightening because Russia was behind the North and we were behind the South, and there was a cold war going on. It was a mess.. like Iraq.
The biggest differences between them is that South Vietnam wanted us there, and Iraq never did.. and...
the soldiers in Vietnam were not a volunteer army.. they were conscripted, dragged away to serve in chains if necessary... and in Iraq, the soldiers are all there by virtue of joining on their own ....
though, don't get me started on the poor Guardsman and the back door draft...grrrr.
Ok , that's all I have in my head. I believe it to be accurate but..... ok, here's a wikipedia listing below.

Not everyone hated it. Just like today, many people hate the war in Iraq.
Why? The answer is the same for Iraq as for Vietnam:
- The war is unwinable - we cannot kill everyone in the Middle East.
- The war is poorly run. First it was Afghanstan, then it switched to Iraq, now Bush is talking about invading Pakistan or Iran!
The man is a moron!
- People are dying for NOTHING.
But the big reason is we are being manipulated into fear.
In the Viet Nam war, we were told if we don't kill the Viet Cong, the communism would take over the world. What a joke! SO people hated the war because the war-mongers killed 54,000 Americans for nothing.

vietnam was the first and possibly only live televised war. "the revolution will be televised!"
From what i hear every nite the family would eat dinner and watch the evening news. This wasn't like tv dinners this was highclass magic box in your living room. Anyway, the news reporters went wherever they wanted too and the GI's felt like movie stars, they would show off for the camera, hold up dead **** guts and proclaim thier victories.
Reality didn't hold up well to heroic stories of David and Frodo Baggins, so the military limited civilian press involvement and now embeds reporters with a platton who's charge is to keep them safe and ignorant of what happens where the fighting is.

Many people supported it, but those who opposed it thought it was an unnecessary interference in someone else's war that was costing tens of thousands of American lives. Some also favored the North Vietnamese government over the South Vietnamese government. Some were young men of draft age, friends and family of young men of draft age who disapproved of such men being drafted to fight and die many thousands of miles away. Some felt that involvement in the war took funding and interest away from vital government programs such as desegregation, fair employment, urban renewal and environmentalism.
In sum, those who opposed the war tended to believe the sacrifice of war was too great a price in the given situation.

1. We were lied to about the reasons we were there.
2. We set up a corrupt puppet government. So its not as if we were fighting on the wrong side. We were the wrong side.
3. The South Viet Nam Army and people werent worth a crap. They sure werent dying for.
4. They were not a threat to us or our national security. In fact, Ho chi Minh actually came to us and asked for help to get rid of the French.
5. 50,000 American lives wasted.
6. There was a draft. Dont let anyone kid you. The 1960's was a time of pervasive fear. If you werent afraid for yourself, you were afraid for a friend or relative going there and being killed. If there was a draft today, you would have rioting in the streets that would make the 60's look like a Mormon picnic.

to respond to you truly, I actual have continuously thought that the actual people, no longer the speaking heads on the "fool container" (as grandad continuously talked approximately because it), help us in each way that they are able to. all of us comprehend deep down that absolutely everyone needs us to do our jobs and get out. all of us comprehend that. Its ppl like the single published above that declare you may help the troops yet no longer their venture that make me scratch my head. To help me, yet dislike the activity i'm doing is an insult to my profession. those are those I actual tend to forget approximately. inspite of the incontrovertible fact that I do what I accomplish that he has the wonderful to talk his peice, and God bless him for it. I even do it so Cindy Sheehan, bless her son, can downtrod our bosses. What we do wish; the media would turn their head for a week or 2 so we are able to do what desires doing to end this crap. i do no longer remember any crying whilst the Allies bombed a college for orphans that doubled as a tank production facility. Nor replaced into there any outrage for the 1000's of displaced Germans and eastern after our bombardments. conflict is an unsightly poor factor. those that are no longer keen to "wallow interior the slop" are those that often combat an uphill conflict. it somewhat is a undemanding guiding principle of solar Tsu, Clausewitz, and Powell doctrines. thank you for the help, and save doing what you're doing. whilst the time strikes for action (ie on the polls) you will do what's sweet! ;)

Because people argued that it wasn't America's war to fight. America went in to prevent the spread of Communism, and we lost way too many troops for what we tried to accomplish.
By the way, it wasn't to prevent Commies from taking over the world, it was to prevent the loss of democratic tradition. If the Communists defeated a democracy, that would fuel Communism because the Commies would use it as evidence that Communism was superior. If we stopped the spread of Communism, that would show democracy is superior.
