Yes. The closer is a relatively new position, but obviously it is very important. If in the future it isn't, that doesn't change today's game. And Hoffman has been the longest lived of them all. Lee Smith belongs there and so does Trevor.

Yes, he certainly will. Still, Hoffman is NOT the best reliever ever. Gossage, Fingers, Sutter, they were all better as they pitched 2-3 innings for a save for much of their careers. The best modern reliever is Mariano Rivera. It is much easier to save ballgames in laid-back San Diego, in the weak National League, where Hoffman is facing light-hitting pinch hitters, whereas Rivera faces tough line-ups every time out.

Also, Rivera is the best postseason pitcher ever. His stats back that up. Hoffman? When he got his first shot in the World Series, he served up a nice, fat changeup to Scott Brosius, turning a 3-2 Padre lead, into a 5-3 Yankee lead.

Trevor Hoffman, Hall of Famer? You bet. Best ever? Sorry, but no.

Not only is he the all time leader in saves, he has a mound presence.

Anyone who says Hoffman doesn't belong in Cooperstown is showing East Coast bias.

yes!

Stunningly good reliever (closer) for an extended length of time, a position which is notorious for burning out pitchers.

Anyway, his name gives it away -- HOFfman.
