Blu-Ray has more companies backing the format, and Sony's PS3 game console comes with a Blu-Ray player built-in for less than the cost of most standalone Blu_ray players.

HD-DVD is backed by Toshiba mainly, and they're about a year behind in getting their players to market. Still, in sales of standalone players (not counting the PS3) HD-DVD is ahead of Blu-Ray. HD-DVD is more popular in Europe, while Blu-Ray is more popular in Japan.

Both formats are arguably obsolete already- people want digital movies they can download, just like digital music on mp3 players has basically made CDs obsolete. So far the file sizes are prohibitive, but that's where the future lies....

Blu Ray has the edge, and although it's not dominanting the competition, it is getting a lot more support from companies. For example, Target is now only going to stock Blu Ray players (they will continue to sell software on both formats). Every little bit of info seems to grow the tide of support behind Blu Ray, and public opinion (truthful or not) does matter in who wins.

neither i think everyone is scared to by either because of buying the one to lose out and be stuck with something they cant use. Though i think blu-ray will over all it a substantially better idea really.
