"It is sometimes said..."
usually by people of northern European heritage
"...that the Europeans who came to America settled in a "virgin land" that was unused and unspoiled."
Certainly the people who lived here before the Europeans moved in thought very differently about how to live on the land and therefore it was unspoiled and beautiful.
Unused? No I don't think so; I believe it was not abused, but rather used intelligently.
Do you believe that this is an accurate description of what happened....?
I think those who write history books don't have the capacity to think beyond their own views and rarely portray an accurate description of what happened. It takes creative and imaginative and truth seeking people like you to explore and publish what is truth.

yes sometimes, you got to look at it throug hthe eyes of jpeople at that time, not the political correct eyes of today. there are now 10 times the Indians in what was later to become the US, than there ever was back at the time of the europeans coming hear in the early 1600s to settle. tribes where few, and far between, they did not litter the coastline, nore did they have perment settlements per say, they moved with the seasons, and warred amounst each other at times, so there was no "civilizied" socially settled lands if you would, to speak of. No large nations, no standing armies to prevent colonist etc. so to them, it was up for grabs, and you got to understand, that the Indians for nearly 200 years helped the colonist drive out the other trips becasue of old rivalries, so they got to take some of the blame as well. Peope are in general in desire of land to call there own, and are not looking to kill some one for it, it is the goverments that raise the armies, and wage the wars. so it' hard to hoestly point fingers from todays perspectives, life was different, values wher different, everything in fact was different.

The idea that the land was "unused" comes from the perspective that land is only productive when it is used for building sites or intensive agriculture or large-scale grazing. The Native Americans were, in fact, "using" it, but only in a low-tech way that could only support small (and, in many areas, semi-nomadic) populations.
