If all drugs were legal then we would curb violence in inner cities who's people wage war on each other over territory to sell drugs .

If people bought hammers and began beating their fingers with them I am sure a ban on hammers would happen .

Why is it we ban things that are bad instead of educating people not to .

Seems we have two major products that are legal ,smoking and booze that are real killers .

Its hard to tell people that drugs are killing people when you have legal products doing the same thing .

Does alcohol really want to compete against pot . Does coffee want to compete against cocaine .
The problem when these laws got written is no lobby to protect them existed .

I see a huge difference with something being legal and advocating people using it .

By making it all legal you would eliminate gangs and the need for 1 million prison beds violent crime would go down and police could pursue and watch real criminals .

Why do people fail to see the logic .

I agree that wanting a practice to be legal isn't the same as advocating the practice. That doesn't mean I want cocaine to be legalized, though. It is just too addictive! But the logic against legalizing marijuanna is NOT logical.

But I completely agree that it is faulty logic to say "something is bad, therefore we must ban it." But it is just about as simplistic to think legalizing drugs would solve as many problems as you seem to think.

I think we need to re-write the drug laws based on science rather than in an attempt to legislate morality.

Yes, but there would still be crimes caused by people trying to get money to buy drugs. Even from the Government who would probably tax it out of every ones reach. With every legal vice, comes responsibility. We would have to build clinics for the addictions, bring on more doctors, nurses, counselors, administrators, we would need buildings, facilities, bedding, security, utilities and equipment. What about the families that would be affected? Then people would be screaming at the high cost. This is logic you cannot overlook. This is not a simple matter of making something legal. You cannot be serious when you say booze is the real killer. How can you compare booze to heroin?

Yes, I think there is a difference. I think the logic from the prohibition crowd assumes that if drugs were legalized everyone would run around like banshees looking for something to smoke, snort or inject, which is pure poppycock. I say we let the junkies use away, and the quid pro quo is that they don't hurt anyone else.

To your point, drugs are illegal. Unless you like the liquid kind.

I have always been an advocate of making ALL drugs legal. Tax them and set up special stores where they can be purchased. Give out free needles.

Then let the junkies go out and shoot themselves to death. Who cares.

It would save billions and billions of dollars. It's cheaper to bury the overdose cases than it is to fight the "war on drugs". Legalization would put a sudden end to the gang violence, drug cartels, empty out prisons and jails, stop most of the violence caused by dopers stealing money for a "fix". It would free our police forces, both local and federal, to
enforce our laws and stop chasing thugs who deal in drugs.
People who abuse drugs contribute nothing to society...so let 'em have at it, I say.

I agree with you. Drugs should be legal, addicts should be treated as sick and in need of help, not criminals.. Why should it be illegal to hurt yourself? it's not illegal to quit your job and throw all your money away, it's not illegal to bash your head against the wall, why should it be illegal to take cocain? About driving, we already have nice healthy alcohol legal and anyone can get any illegal drug if they want to, so what? I don't think driving intoxicated should be legal. Someone above me said they don't think guns should be legal either, yeah, guns are for killing other people! There's a big difference in that and taking drugs yourself.

I really don't want to ride on a bus being driven by a stoned or drunk driver.

Besides, caffiene is being touted now as aiding in preventing Alzheimers. You can't say the same for cocaine.

I think the problem with prohibition of alcohol was the violence and corruption was much more widespread.

I disagree with the assertion that the gangs would be eliminated. They'd find something else to control one way or another.

Makes perfect sense to me

The war on drugs is ridiculas, and another example of a government failure.

Study after study shows the most cost effective way to reduce drug use is through treatment.
Americans have let government convince them that punishing those that sell drugs is the right thing to do.
I will say
Its stupid and lazy to sell drugs, but since when has being stupid and lazy been a crime?

I view the war on drugs as just another manipulating way for government to control and make money.
Not much effort is put into stopping drugs from entering our country.
Instead government watches these drug dealers sell their drugs, build up their bank, buy cars , buy houses etc
Then government steps in and pops them.
Money is confiscated, cars, houses etc are confiscated
Anything with value.
Then the drug dealer is put in jail...which costs who?
You got it ...you, the taxpayer
Who pays for those nice DEA and ATF tactical vests.
Who pays for the training of drug sniffing dogs?
I could go on and on but I think you get the point.
You pay.

I think I could sum it up by saying the war on drugs is insane.
It promotes more dependency on government due to fear.
Alot of money is coming out of our pocket to give them more power without doing much for the problem.

Id also like to express the ridiculasness, with the war on drugs no knock warant policy.
88 yo woman gunned down in her own home by government officials due to the war on drugs. see below

People need to open their eyes and see that the best place for government is out of your life.
Everything they do is a failure and has some agenda attached to it.

Thanks for bringing this up.

Because there is money to be made by keeping it illegal, also its a public safety issue.
For example Alcohol is legal, now multiply all the other drugs users with their "legal " substance behind the wheel.

No, drugs shouldn't be legal. Of course, my thinking is that guns shouldn't be legal either. Neither should private health care companies. I guess I am a crazy socialist!
