Hi Sam, I know how hard it is when you can't talk to someone about this stuff, I couldn't either. I started when I was 9, but my sister started when she was 15. Nobody in my family started as early as me, as far as I know. When I got older I asked my cousins and my mother. Anyway, sometimes you may get cramps in your pelvis, then your flow begins, sometimes you may ( sorry, I got interupted!) feel nothing unusual, and you go to the bathroom and there it is. Everyone is different. Maybe you could speak to a friend's mom or big sister. The school nurse is also an option. I think the most important thing is that you find someone that you can talk to. When you begin to produce the hormones that begin this part of your life, there are emotional changes as well. Also understand that you can become pregnant as well. Accurate information is so important. I didn't think you could become pregnant the first time and guess what! My "first time" is now a 27 year old man! I also thought since my periods were becoming very irregular when I was 41 that I was entering menopause, and my third son is now 7 years old! My middle son is the onnly one that was planned! Anyway do find someone you can ask questions and remember that the only stupid question is the one you don't ask. Good Luck

I got my first at 11 but I hit puberty a bit earlier at 9. Usually sure fire signs of your period coming up soon are

-stomach cramps (area below the stomach)

-it may feel as though your female insides are about to fall out (alot of women say that this happens for them)

-light brown discharge, may be darker in color for some women but IT WILL STAIN so get stain remover to use with your laundry soap. If left untreated the discharge will stain ur bedding and underwear. It must be treated promptly to avoid this. Also, this discharge may have a foul odor.

-a funky foul smelling vaginal odor about 2-4 days before you actually start bleeding.

-bright red blood will appear, usually light or spotting here or there at first but will get heavier eventually

Note: If the blood does this and disappears for awhile, your best bet is to keep wearing a pad or tampon because you are NOT done your period. It will come back.

I wouldn't worry too much if you start or don't start right around the age your mom did. I have no idea about when my mom started... Every female is different. The number of days for their menstrual cycles also vary. Don't worry if your period especially your first one is very short or very light. You are just starting out and may be irregular for awhile, until you've had more cycles or even as you get older.

Ten years old is awfully early. Are you developing in other places as well? You will know it's here when you feel like you've wet your pants. You need to visit the nurse or the restroom quickly before you've gotten your clothes dirty.

If mom doesn't want to talk about it, then you need to find a book that explains it all.

You have to know, honey, that even though you're only 10 or 11, you can still get pregnant. I worked in a prenatal clinic. We took care of a lot of pregnant ladies. And one or two were your age. So make sure that book you get explains contraception and why it's better to wait for sexual experiences until you're older and in a loving, committed relationship.

If you have any questions, I'm a mom who doesn't mind talking about it.

You might feel horrible cramps in the lower part of you belly like you wanna "go" but you cant go. You will see some brown stains on your panty that gradually turns to red, or you wills ee red right away. the only warning it really gives is the cramps, but not everyone get cramps, so you gotta be alert and aware of any feeling of wetness on your panties. OH, I almost forgot, some people get a white discharge a few days before that smell normal, but leaves white stains on your panty.
just be alert and aware.

Honey, be prepared with some maxi pads, and it could happen at anytime. You may notice that you are cranky , emo, or cramping. Dont worry yourself about it cause it may not happen for a few years yet! Also when you start to develop breast and hair like underarm and such thats a good time to watch out!
Good luck sweety

You don't know when exactly your going to get it. But you can watch out for signs:
-Sore Breasts
-Brownish discharge
-cramps in lower stomach
-mood swings
(Blood on panties is a huge one)
Did I forget anything else ladies?

I'm sorry your mother isn't open to you about this. You can always talk to a teacher or an adult that you trust about this. Or, you can always e-mail me sweety. I would be more than happy to discuss this more in depth with you.

I've heard that after you start getting underarm hair and pubic hair, it's about a year after that. unfortunately, you'll find out when you go to the bathroom.

good luck!!
