1. First try using the tools in Start>Programs>System Tools: Clean Up and Defragment.
2. If you're computer is starting slow, try changing the settings on the programs that start with Windows. Actually, you might want to change the settings on unnecessary programs that are running all the time.
3. If your computer is still slow, uninstall unnecessary programs.
4. You might need more RAM as well, but try some of these things first.

Firs of all: if your computer was running fine and then suddenly became slow, it's very probable you have a virus. If you're infected and don't have an antivirus installed, you can try an online antivirus. Just browse to http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html to scan your machine directly from the Web.
However, if your computer has always been slow, you could try adding more RAM (random-access memory). Another avenue is to try and optimize it. I found a few articles about that from Microsoft (I'm assuming you use Windows):
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/moredone/optimize.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/atwork/getstarted/speed.mspx

Good luck!

You may be having a spyware\virus issue:
Try this, Go to Yahoo and search for "download e-scan for windows" (without the quotes). Download the "e-scan for windows" from Microworld Technologies (www.mwti.com) 15 day trial, install it and update it, and scan your computer.
It should clean almost all the junk.
Either buy the full version or remove it from your computer after the 15 days. I suggest you buy it and use it weekly.
If this does not speed up your computer, there are other issues such as hardware problems, software degradation, or a rootkit.

There are several things.
Run your Virus Software regularly,
Use your Operating Systems Utilities.
Disk Clean-up
Run one or more of the free Spyware or Adware removal tools.
Spybot Search and Destroy.
Lavasofts- Adaware.
On your tools Internet Options erase all online cookiesand all other off-line content.
This will help a bunch, and do it once a week need to or not.

You can try and run a spyware/virus checker to see if there is any malicious programs hogging resources or just close programs running in the background. Programs like MSN Messenger [when not logged on] may still run and use resources even thou you are not "using" it.
Another option would be to buy more RAM fro your computer.

Could be a few things.
Maybe your comp needs more RAM, or you have a bad stick of RAM.
Defrag the HD.
Delete all your temp files.
You may have lots of spyware. Run a program such as spybot or adaware, they are free.
You may have some viruses. Be sure your comp has up to date AV software and run it.

Virus/anti spy scan, defragmenting the hard drive, disk cleanup utility. The latter two can be accessed via start menu/all programs/accessories/system tools if you are running windows. Linux or Mac os I can't help, sorry.
