You've got a lot of time yet. Remember, 38 weeks is the START of the time when you can be due. You might go as long as 42 weeks.
Hon, nearly everything that anyone will tell you that will kickstart labor either doesn't work or is too dangerous. I know, you're really tired of being pregnant, and you want it over. Unfortunately, this is the point when you have to obey your body and let it dictate when it's ready to push the baby out.
The pain in your ribcage is ligaments stretching.

Baby can turn even in labor, so if baby is breech, you can continue to take measures to turn him vertex all the way up to labor starting. http://www.spinningbabies.com is a great site for ideas and info.
You are considered full term at 37 weeks and could have the baby anytime between now and 42+ weeks without worry. It's honestly better for baby to stay inside for as long as he/she wants. Baby can develop better and easier while inside. You can certainly try the sex trick though, and doing the exercises the other person suggested (cleaning your house top to bottom) can help induce labor as well as turn a malpositioned baby. Just don't overdo it. You don't want to exhaust yourself before labor even starts.
I got frequent sharp pains under my ribcage in the last month of pregnancy. It was mostly little baby boy kicking me, but it can also be ligaments. Your baby could have changed positions and is kicking you in a way you're not used to. You can ask your doctor/midwife about it at your next appointment or call if it really bothers you. Mother's instinct is one of the best indicator of anything good or bad happening when it comes to your pregnant body.
Good luck and happy birth wishes to you!

There is still time for bub to turn - don't let Dr's tell you other wise!! - Search the net for ways to help encourage bub to turn. Some theory's sound weird but apparently work.
Inducing birth - SEX SEX and more SEX... I know its the last thing you probably feel like but semen is the best induction drug out there. They even use a drug that mimics its effect in hospital... honestly get in the most comfortable position and get your partner to do the deed over and over again.. and you just stay put & try not to let any of that precous stuff drip out (grose i know) BUT IT WORKS - well if you bub is ready that is... has worked for me and my friends.. we have all gone into labor within 24 hours of torchering ourselfs with this rutien...
As for the pain - dont know - maybe bub is just on a nerve??
Good luck and would be keen to hear if you try it and it works for you..

babys head: my daughter never left the head first position after like 20 wks
bring on labor: walk, sex, and once you hit 40 wks and you absolutely need the baby out castor oil... keep in mind that full term to most docs is 42 wks... just be patient.. you dont want the baby to come when he or she is not ready.. dont rush it make it a suprise!!
and the back pain: i had a lot of pain in my mid to lower back and ended up having back labor... wouldnt doubt the same thing for you as well
Good Luck
