OK me Stepmom to three kids I've been raising them for three years husbands gone alot with work thier Mom lives in another state hasent seen in threee years untill a week ago. I was not in the court room but was asked to wait in the hall by my husbands attorney. when court was over everyone came out and informed me that the Judge had placed the kids in my care and that i was to supervise both parents when around the kids or when either one of them was on the phone. But I don't understand why he choose me the stepmom over maybe someone who does it for a living. and why? I think it might be because both of the parnets signed papers years ago giving me Gaurdenshipe rights and the kids have been in my care since. My husband is home alot but gone a few days aweek. It makes it hard to balance all this and my husband is haveing trouble dealing with it too. has this happend to anybody please help. it all so crazy and happened so fast.

Yes "because both of the parents signed papers years ago giving me Gaurdenship rights".

That's exactly why -- and you can refuse that responsibility by informing the court that you are refusing to be a guardian.

The guardianship paper would have affected the decision and the Court probably felt that you are qualified by your current relationship with the children i.e. you've been raising them. It is unfortunate that they didn't let you stay in the courtroom so you could have input and know what was going on. You could advise the Court that you refuse to be the kids' guardian, but be sure that is really what you want. You must care for them or you wouldn't have taken care of them for so long.

Personal opinion: you probably seemed like the most rational, trustworthy person in the crowd, the one that can be counted on to keep the kids safe, and both parents sound like they trust you but neither trusts the other.

Your the gaurdian. In essence those children are yours, you are legally responsible for their well being. It doesnt matter if the parents, grandparents, or Jesus Christ of Nazereth was in front of the judge. Everything that has to do with those three children has to be through you.
