I am assuming that middle school will be grades 7-8. That is ages 12-14, one of the toughest years for kids because of the onset of puberty. For boys, testosterone is at an all-time high and for girls, hormonal peaks and surges are far too many to count. God bless you.
As an uncertified teacher, this means that you probably have not been trained on the nuances of the classroom. This puts you at a disadvantage, but you can overcome it.
There is a great website called the new middle school teachers guide and it can be found at http://www.middleweb.com/1stDResources.html. It has great resources and topics liked discipline and classroom management, the first days of middle school and an online listserv where you can get specific assistance from teachers in the field.
Check it out and good luck to you.

Hey there. I've been teaching high school English for almost 10 years. The best advice I can give you is this...
1. Be consistent. On the first day of class, you've gotta lay down the law! Say what you mean and mean what you say. If students see that you are willing to "bend the rules," the game is over.
2. Always have a plan. Plan ahead as far as possible. If you don't keep them busy, they will keep you busy. Trust me.
I also recommend that you pick up a book entitled, "The First Day of School." I think that's the title anyhow. If that's not the title, it's pretty close. I know for a fact that the last name of the author is Wong. It's pretty easy to find at, say, your local Barnes and Noble. I suggest you pick it up yesterday! Study that thing forwards and backwards. It got me through my first two years of teaching. Best wishes!

Just make sure you have lessons plans ready and ahead of time, rather than going on a whim and trying to sound smart. When I was in high school, we had a new teacher at the begining of the year. He was smart, yes, but he didn't have any good lesson plans and I felt that class was a waste of my time - I didn't learn anything useful that would've helped me for next year.
