Where I live, the Mosquito Abatement District stocks ornamental ponds with gambusia, a small (3-4"), olive gray to black minnow also called a "mosquito fish." Gambusia look rather like a really ugly molly, and they reproduce like wildfire. They are the rabbits of the fish world.

The MAD does this for any pond they become aware of, or are asked to stock, whether the owner of the pond did the asking or is aware of it or not. In fact, once you are on the MAD's "radar," you have to make a special request to them NOT to stock your pond if you *do not* want gambusia in your pond (there is a whole list of reasons why you wouldn't want them - e-mail me through my profile and I will share....).

So, if you didn't have a goldfish spawn that you were unaware of, it is possible that you have been stocked with gambusia courtesy of your local MAD.

Of course, the only way to know for sure is to post a picture here so some knowledgeable fish geek can ID it, or catch one and take it to your county's extension service or the vet for possible ID....

Hope this helps.

Your goldfish could of cross breeded when you didnt notice it.

Or someone could of gone to your house and put these fish in there.

Try post a photo so that we can try tell what kind of fish or breed it is.
