I am deciding what type of CPU would best suit me for my laptop.... To my knowledge, if i plan to run multiple programs at same time (download off limewire and running a virus check at same time) a Duo Core would be best....but
If i plan on doing 1 task at a time (download off limewire, THEN run a virus check after download is complete) a good ol pentium 4 is best.
Am i correct?

I recently got the Dell 1521. It is with the T7500, Core 2 DUo, 2.2 GHz. it runs like a beast. You can't get P4's on laptops anymore, plus the new CPU's save energy, and are way faster. They also consume less energy, which means longer run times for your battery. A Core 2 Duo will blow you away. Don't get an old P4, it's outdated and useless.

Pentium 4 chips are cheaper than dual or quad core.

If your programs are written for dual core they will be faster than an old Pentium. But only major programs like Photoshop, video editing, and a few brand new games are programed to use 2 cores. The number of programs will increase as they are rewritten to use 2 or more cores.

But if you can get a real CPU deal and only do simple tasks like downloading, surfing, virus check one at a time you will not see an increase to justify the extra price for multiple cores at this time.

No, you are wrong. Even a single core of a Core 2 Duo is faster than the Pentium 4s, they do more instructions per clock cycle, which allows them to do more work at a lower clock speed. Also, as someone else mentioned you don't get Pentium 4s for laptops, I suppose you meant Pentium Ms, which I don't even think are still offered.

Quite honestly the Quad Core is the best right now.
