Im trying to figure out what the difference is between the Non-waiver trade deadline and the Waiver trade deadline. I understand a good portion of how it works, but I can't find out specifically how long one has to sit on waivers before he can be traded

Waiver claims must be filed within 72 hours of the player's name being submitted.

If a player placed on these waivers and is not claimed by another team during the three business days (72 hours) after waivers have been requested, then the players is said to have cleared waivers. This 72-hour window does not include weekends, so the window for players submitted today expires Friday. When a player has cleared waivers, the team has secured waivers for the player until August 31st. Teams may attempt to claim a player off waivers during a 47-hour window beginning at 11:00AM PT on the day waivers are requested (or the first business day thereafter) until 10:00AM PT two business days later.

If a player does not clear waivers or rather he is claimed by another team(s) the club requesting waivers may withdraw the waiver request. If the club does not withdraw the waiver request within 48 hours, the player's contract is assigned in the following manner: Teams may discuss a trade during a 48 1/2-hour window before a decision to recall, trade, or let go a player must be made.

Non-waiver trade means that the other team can get the player without having to clear waivers, but the only exception would be in the case of a veteran in the 5/10 club or with a no trade clause then they would have to clear waivers before the trade can be official. The waiver deadline trade says that any traded player must clear waivers in order for the deal to go through. Usually it takes close to three days for players to clear waivers.
