Bush and Cheney are both valid examples of politicians seeking to increase their power to a degree that will be ruinous for America.
On a broader level, I like to believe, even if it's wrong, that there are some people who enter politics out of an actual desire to better their community, province, state, or country. I agree with Henry Kissinger, who said that "Power is the ultimate aphrodisiac" and George Orwell, who argued throughout his journalism that power is its own reward. To quote Lord Acton, "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely." Even politicians whom I have admired, and there have been a few, seem to succumb to these realities.
