The first thing to consider is what will become of the pet when the teenager leaves home. Will the family be able to keep the pet until such time as its owner can take it again? I am thinking of the teen going off to college or the military for a few years.
That said, I think a cat is the perfect pet. They are pretty self-sufficient as far as care goes. Just keep their box taken care of and provide food. Dogs, on the other hand are higher maintenance, with the walking every day. Cats can be very loving, and don't bark and keep the family awake at night.

it all matters on the teen if its very busy and is not scaried of big things u should think of a snake it eats only like 2 a month and is not that dirty, then you could get a fish it should be feed only once a day and is pretty cool to watch but u cant teach it any tricks, then thiers the cat if u train it u want even need a litter all you have to do it feed it and let it out side an open the door for it once its do doin it do, you could also get a dog but this is pretty hard u have to walk it, feed it, give it a bath so it matter on the teen time and patients, or you could get it an iguana this is a cool pet and all you have to do is give it lettus and clean after it! hope i helped
p.s im a 14 year old and have 3 cats, 1 dog, 1 snake, 2 iguanas, 4 fish, and one bird and i take care of them

It depends on the teenager and their tastes and preferences and how responsible they are. Teens should also keep in mind that sometime between age 18-21 they will probably be moving out for school or work and will probably be living somewhere where they can't have pets. So cats and dogs that live 10-20 years will likely become their parents' pets, so make sure the parents are onboard with this program.

It all really depends. I am a teen and I have 3 birds, 3 dogs, 2 fish, and a farm pig.
My parents only help out by driving me to buy food for them.
Other than that I am on my own.
If you are responsible I would say any of the following:
Bird, Fish, Hamster, or Dog

Hmm... I personally like my Green Cheeked Conure and my Chinchilla the best... They're not so pig-headed as some dogs are. (**coughcough**my dogs..**coughcough**)
But best pet? That's hard to say. Depends on how responsible the teenager in question is. If they're extremely irresponsible a fish, if they're extremely responsible, maybe something that's harder to take care of like a chinchilla... I really don't know.

if you have time to care for a pet a cat would be good. it can stay alone, have a litter box and as long as there is food and water available you can go away for a few days. with school and dating and other events a dog might be to much to handle as they need lots of care. you might consider turtles or some kind of lizard which doesen't need as much care when you are busy with other things. what ever you decide just make sure your are ready for a pet. they need food, water, cleaning and lots of love and care always and will be with you for some time.good luck on your choice.

Could be any common household pet. A dog, a cat, a fish, a bird, a hamster. I've had plenty of goldfish, and although four of my hamsters have already passed on, we still have four wonderful ones to look after. :)

That is TOTALLY dependent on the teenager.
When I was a kid (teen) I had a cat, a horse and a parrot (I still have the horse & parrot) and had no problems taking care/responsibility for them.
It all depends on the kid and how responsible he/she is.
