the Sicon or the PtCruiser? those are by far the most shoe-like cars ever made.

And you have an answer to these "ugly" cars.People buy them because people like you, that make their livings on opinions, have not given them a better idea. Yes in some peoples minds the Aztec is boxy, I think its a waste of air, but other people may like it. What do you drive that makes it the greatest car in the world? Do you even drive? Do not condemn others unless you can give an alternative as to what they should do. and prove your reason

To the jaguar comment, they are nothing but fords. They stick some of the garbage engines in jaguars. Just because a vehicle looks ugly on the outside, don't disregard the content on the inside. The XB was aimed at the younger crowd. They are cheap, spacious, and good on insurance. It was toyota's way of trying to resell the echo. Elements IMO are nice vehicles, powerful, reliable, and plenty of room, they also hold their value well.

One thing is buying one for transportation, another is customizing one. I like custom cars, but why would you buy an ugly shoe box to customize, and spend 3-4 times more then what the car cost to do it? Why don't you buy a better looking car with that money, and that same car would take less to make it look good?
It's one thing if a teenager buys one and customizes it, but someone in their 30's shouldn't!, they look ridiculous.
That's my opinion.

Generally speaking the boxy shape lends itself to better structural protection for the driver and passenger compartment, hence increased safety of life and limb and (theoretically at least) lower insurance premiums.
The main selling point of Volvo for years, was and is their enviable safety record when compared to American designed and built cars. You might not always be able to avoid a shunt in a Volvo, but at least you and your family have a better chance of walking away from it.

One is the Scion XB. The Japs think we want and need freaking boxes to drive around. Another is the Honda Element

These cars - like aztek - not only look like a box but run like a box... I agree this is the last degree of mazochism but it's perfectly legal!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
They bought the car because a) they liked it; b) it suited their financial needs; c) both.
OR- maybe they like being different, they buy ugly cars just because.
