I've been thinking about this recently. That as many open relationships everyone says they are cool with being in. I.E. the swingers and such (though we all know one of the partners sort of regrets that in the end). I have just come to realize that the only true open relationship these days is when the couple gets a seperation. I mean they are still married and both partners can go out and date others without getting mad at one another for it. What everyone think though? Is a seperation the only truly open relationship that a couple can be in without the other partner getting hurt feelings?

To be well and trully honest here. I'm not married or being open and cheating on anyone. I was just getting at the fact that, in logical reasoning wouldn't it make more sense that a seperation be the one true open relationship that neither person gets hurt in because there is no emotional investment on either partners part of the relationship anymore. And yea I still think that still fully being married is a relationship in the eyes of the law if not to the two people involved.

To be honest, I have seen a few "open relationships" which are nothing more than an excuse to cheat. None of these relationships have survived more than 4 years.

Why don't they survive? A relationship is based on mutual trust and love. It is a special bond between two people. When other people are allowed to enter that relationship it breaks that bond between the two. They no longer turn to each other in times of need, but they begin to look at the outside world as fulfilling all their needs. They don't need their partner anymore.

um, yeah, get your facts straight. an open relationship and swinging are not the same thing. open relationship is where one or both partners are free to do whatever with whoever and whenever with no discretion. swinging is an exploration of sexuallity with both partners being involved for the benefit of each other, whether that's fully swapping partners or just playing around between couples.

If either partner has any kind of sexual relationship with another person, that will do irreparable damage, and yes, will "hurt". In other words, no, it is never OK to have an affair, never. Get a divorce, and get real.

The only problem is that when you're separated you are NOT in a relationship.
