There's no such thing as a joke that doesn't offend somebody.

And we're in a political climate where most voters decide to vote against the other guy, rather than vote for you.

So no politician is going to take a risk like that.

There's a link to an article on the Huffington Post about this very topic.

Personally, I think a politician should have a sense of humor because otherwise, what would be the point of political humor? Public officials are "public" and therefore under the scrutiny of their citizens at large. If they took every comedian who poked fun at them too seriously, it would be very boring.

Also, a sense of humor can allow a candidate to relate to voters. No one enjoys following a leader who drones on and on with little to break the monotony. That is why charisma is a factor in choosing an elected official.

Ronald Regan could do it and in fact was cracking jokes left and right at the debates. Politicans now are not as smart as Regan even though he was labled at the time as not being that smart.

I have heard Rudy Guiliani be funny, Fred Thompson and even Lieberman, but for the most part they are all pretty stuffy. I think they would get more votes if they were funny. We would be able to relate to them more.

Yeah, that's the problem. If they screw up a joke, or somebody gets offended, then they're in deep yogurt.
