Yes! Before I start, because it will be a long answer, let me tell you where my info comes from. My "partner" had very high blood pressure, to the point where he was hospitalized for several weeks. After taking him to see my Homopathic practitioner once, his blood pressure is sometimes well below normal, and he has lost over 70 pounds. I hope this helps.
First, he should continue taking any medication his doctor has given him, and have any tests done that are recomended. Secondly, invest in a blood pressure monitor you can use at home. You can find one online at lower prices, however, you can pick up one from your local drug store (or even Wal-Mart or Target) for about $30. That way he can monitor his pressure thru out the day. There may be some part of the day that is particularlly stressful to him that is raising it.
Third, if he is over weight, he needs to loose weight. If he is not excercising on a regular basis, he needs to. Just like there is no magic diet pill to make you skinny, there is no magic pills to make you healthy if you have heart disease. It takes work.
As far as supplements go... He should be taking an asprin in the morning and at night (with some food). Co Q-10 & fish oil supplements are also very helpful. However, he should check with his doctor before starting any excercise regiment or taking any suplements.
The one thing I can tell that will probally be the most helpful to you, cut out as much sugar as you can! Read the ingredients on everything you buy. You will be shocked to see what has sugar in it. Even many spices you buy do. I found out I was allergic to sugar cane, and let me tell you, it was an eye opeining experience!
If you have a health food store in your area, go there and ask them about supplements to lower blood pressure. They should be a great help. If you have a Homopathic practioner in your area, you should consider setting up an appt. .
I am sorry if my spelling is awful, the spell check does not seem to be working tonight.
Good luck & good health!!

Blood pressure measurements don't count for anything if you've been walking around. Ideally, you should be sitting down for at least 5 minutes or so. Blood pressure also can vary during the day, so it's best to get measurements from similar times during the day. No caffeine in the morning either. These measurements should be repeated on a few separate occasions. Some people get "white coat hypertension" when they go to the doctor's office because they are nervous. Probably blood pressure medicines wouldn't kill you. But you don't necessarily need blood pressure medicines if your blood pressure is only high while active. When doctors study the effects of high blood pressure, they study the effects of people who are diagnosed with it as described above. You are probably at no higher cardiac risk from your blood pressure.

3 years ago, I was diagnosed - hypertension with a reading of 160/100. I used to feel dizzy a lot, my legs had awful cramps, and levels were very low in my potassium, causing my fingers and toes to always cramp together. One day I started to feel really faint while I was driving with my daughter in the back seat and I passed out, hitting 3 cars and ending up in a ditch. That moment,I knew I had to do something because my meds weren't working. I heard about this diet from a friend and thought I'd give it a shot. The results have been remarkable. In just 21 days, I honestly can't remember feeling this good, my blood pressure went from 175/110 to 125/70.

Yes. Take supplements of vitamins and include extra C and B vitamins, minerals and calcium. Eat banannas for the Potassium. Drink lots of water. (Supplements are important because you will flush out good things as well as the sodium.)
If you haven't sprayed your lawn with chemicals or fertilizers, you might consider digging up the dandelions and preparing a dandelion coffee using the weed's root. (this is a dieuretic) Some people think it tastes better than regular coffee. You can buy dandelion tea online, but it is expensive and less fun to make.
Drink lots of waters, but you will want to take lots of extra vitamins to compensate. The American diet has many times the amount of sodium (salt) that you need, so you don't usually need to worry about not having enough salt. It's the amount of salt in your blood stream that is critical. Drinking lots of water flushes out extra salt (but it flushes out vitamins and helpful minerals as well).
If you need a drug, start with a dieuretic first. This can be more effective than the more expensive drugs and it may have fewer side effects. If you need more powerful medicine the doctor can prescribe more sophisticated drugs.
You might also exercise 20-60 minutes a day (aerobic) 5 days per week to help with this and your general health. (Of course, check with your physician and start gradually.) Losing weight can be a big help.
Also, you must have adequate Calcium. Garlic is also effective.

In addition to the advice about cutting back on salt, hypertension is usually associated with obesity. I began a program of walking a mile a day when I quit smoking - mostly to avoid gaining weight. I gradually ramped it up to 2 miles/day. I lost 60 pounds, lowered my cholesterol by 60 points, and went off my blood pressure med. If you can commit to sensible eating and an exercise program, you may be able to avoid prescription drugs. If not, do see the doc, because hypertension can kill without warning.

Ignarro, Furchgott and Murad were awarded the Nobel Prize for discovering what relaxes blood vessels.
It's nitric oxide, which you can get mainly from arginine, a cheap amino acid. Taken on an empty stomach, it relaxes blood vessels. Keep increasing the dose until it works.
Good luck and be well.

Cut down on salt but it won't make that much difference. If he wants to live long-term Lisinopril has gone generic now and fallen hugely in price, it is the best ACE Inhibitor. So far it's given me 10 years extra from end stage terminal heart failure caused by malignant hypertension in '97 and I'm fit enough to last another 20!
