If you want good hip-hop get some Mos Def (couple songs would be Close Edge, Sex Love and Money, Sunshine) Dr. Octogon (3000, Blue Flowers, Earth People) Jurassic 5 (just get their first e.p. it's really, really great top to bottom. Break and What's Golden are really good tunes as well). Blackstar is very cool too.
For modern rock, the Shins are really great. The first couple White Stripes records are pretty good. Interpol another good choice. The Mars Volta are really great.
**************
How could I forget the Roots. The Roost are very good. Check out the Seed v. 2.0, great song by them.
As for the modern rock, I could probably give you some suggestions. What kind of rock are you into?

Well, now these days R&B and Hip Hop are about the same to me ... I've recently gotten into New Edition again ... all their older stuff is great. I think they came out with something under the Bad Boy label but I haven't heard about it ... it could be a remix collection.

There is no such thing as a "good" hip hop song.
