I am halfway done with the cpa exam in Cali, what is the best way to get my resume out to accounting firms ?

I am within walking distance of the big 4, do I just drop off a resume at their HR?

That's not a bad idea. But do you just want them to know you'll be available soon (giving them your expected date of availability) or do you want to work immediately? That may be possible only during your hols, and they may just give you a "vacation trainee" post or whatever you call it over there. Don't pooh-pooh this, cos once you have worked in a firm before and have learnt their methodology, it's more likely that they'll employ you when you finish your exam. All the best to you!
