A good friend of mine bought me a 3D gender determining ultrasound package, including one 20 week quick scan to see the sex of the baby, and another scan around 30 weeks just for fun.

I've read all about the potential dangers of 3D ultrasound. However, everything is so inconclusive that I don't want to risk offending my friend (and wasting her money).

Does anyone know if there are more risks involved with a single 3D ultrasound? I'll basically be only getting one, and it won't go on for very long - it's not video.

Thanks.

I asked my dr. about this and he said unless you are doing ultrasounds every other day of your pregnancy then there isnt anything to worry about.

It's totaly fine. My friend's doctor uses a 3-D ultrasound at her regular prenantal appointments. She was able to find out the sex at 16 weeks with the 3-D! She said you can see color and she looks like a real baby. She loves it. I wish I could have one done. If I were you I would do both of them. If doctors are using them on their regular patients then it should be safe and very enjoyable.

i haven't heard of this causing any problems. I would think if it was going to harm the woman or baby the doctors wouldn't do it. I have had them in the past with my girls and i am scheduled to have another one with this pregnancy at 24 weeks. but i would advise you to wait until about 24 weeks to have it done because you'll get to see more of the baby!

My new doctor does a 3D ultrasound at every appointment. (So far 3).

Go ahead and do it...you won't regret it. And that's a really cool gift your friend gave you.

I think most ultrasound experts (and my MIL teaches ultrasound technology and agrees with this) think that ultrasound is overused. It shouldn't be for just a "fun" look at the baby.

It uses sound waves after all, and many babies (mine included) are shown covering their ears during the procedure. Who knows what their experience is like? Let the kid be!

This is something you have to decide. It's your friend, and your baby.
