With 401k and IRA plans, more than 50% of Americans now own stocks directly or through mutual funds. This ownership influences economic and political actions of the companies. Do you think these corporations will become more responsive to us as shareholders than our political bodies are to us as citizens? Is this a better place to find answers to public health and safety, enviromental, and economic issues?

People influence the market through funds as well as individual stocks. Investors can select environmentally friendly stocks or funds weighted towards a particular industry for example. Some of the annual reports I read seem to be reaching out to individual investors. If nothing else the board member don't like the idea of investors avoiding the stock of their companies.
