being a lover of your country,,,has only one word patriotism ,,,the ability to defend and stand up in front of those who think or try to harm it,,racism and fascism is words who denote a extremity of acts beyond logic and normality..personally i see who has seen his country being invaded destroyed ,tortured by a certain group or party or nation ,no matter how long time passes ,,if he could go back in time,,and live that day ,,he would know how forgiveness isnt easy sometimes in front of brutality of the crimes convicted...a patriot is the word and love for a nation is the love of existence in front of those who want to deny u the right of existence

The word "nationalism" has been associated with so many bad things that it's just not a good idea to use it to describe yourself. Consider, as an example, Quebec nationalism in my home country of Canada. The "nationalists" in Quebec want to form a separate French-speaking country and therefore destroy Canada as we know it. Not a positive development. Similar ethnic nationalism has been responsible for the disasters occurring in the countries that formerly were parts of Yugoslavia. In France, nationalism has become equated with a semi-fascist political party. If nationalism were a name, it would be "Adolph": once popular, but now discredited and rarely used.

A true American nationalist celebrates the principles upon which his country was founded. Freedom, liberty, equality, etc preclude a fascist state.
If a country is based upon amoral principles, such as observed throughout history, nationalism will lead to fascism or other equally bad results.
When nationalism is combined with Socialism, fascism is the result.
This was especially true in the case of Nazi Germany

Being nationalist is not a bad thing... Keep in mind that if our ancestors did not love our country would not give their souls, minds, and bodies for their country. They fought for her freedom and they gave everything about Greece. So what's wrong with that?
I think it's not what you tell, but the way you tell it... Nationalists know how to express their love and concern about the country, without sounding fascist...

I believe that the term "nationalism" is given a... bad meaning - and it shouldn't.
It is true that very often -if not always- denotes one who has extreme ideas and acts accordingly over his country. Literally nationalism has the meaning YOU give here. It is genuine love of one's country, the heritage etc. I am only afraid that the term has been a bit distorted and describes what is not. It tends to be synonym to fascism.

One of the cornerstones of Democracy is the right to dissent. Those who try to stomp on that right are the ones who are being fascist or racist>I don't belive that people who truly love thier country are be necessity on the same side of the floor when it comes to the trampling of civil liberties that are(or were)stated in the Constitution&The Bill of Rights &we should all just agree to disagree & let the majority(the real majority, which is all of us)ruleTL

Dear Leonarda,
Nationalism is the belief that nationality is the proper focus of political identity and that the nation-state is the proper focus of political loyalty. This sentiment expresses itself variously in separatist movements, which advocate political self-determination for people of a certain cultural heritage (primarily language); in irredentist claims on territories historically or ethnically belonging to the nation; and in movements to save the national identity from being diluted or altered by immigration.
That is alright and tolerable BUT if a certain individual takes this love and care for this nation one step further -which often occurs - and start hating another nation because of their religion, language, heritage common history or their culture and want to harm them- i.e making statements like : KILL THE .... or DEATH TO..... or uses insulting language to a member or a supporter of the related nation, that is a very similar to Nazi state of fascism and can be quite dangerous and not accepted by the mojority.
If you mean patriotism which is love of and devotion to one's country, that is normal, expected and mostly accepted.
PS: Dear Leonarda, I only menitoned that individual as an example since he is the only one that we both know of and that fits to the description. That was my intension. You asked a general question, I wanted to explain better with an example.

I think everyone no matter where they are born or live should be nationalists. A pride in your country and a desire for it's success is very important. I have always thought that everyone should have pride in their respective races too. We may not get a say so in the race we are born but we do have the choice to have pride in it and wish to see others of that race succeed. That is not of course to say that you should denigrate any other or refuse to help others. We are all different and I think it is wrong not to have pride in those differences and also in our commonalities.

(Sorry, yet i actual dont believe that the full of Iran LOVES the united states of a) no longer each and every person on the two area is complete of hatred, yet there is countless worry, distrust and suspicion on the two aspects. And the two aspects have a minimum of a few reason to worry. sometimes the loudest human beings get heard greater in many circumstances. And the media concentrates on showing us the acts of human beings who burn the flag and so on for the reason that's what sells. there is countless lack of awareness in the yankee public and the present government promotes it for the reason that way its greater handy to control the a lot into helping despite Bush needs to do. maximum individuals have not have been given any theory if Iran is a rustic or an unique dessert. yet while Bush says Iran is undesirable, a minimum of 40% of the inhabitants says "suitable on!" Furthermoreif somone doesn't love wha is in effect the extention of his ego (for the Nations DO exist and they are the sum of its members) how n earth would love somone who has nothing in common with?
