Shouldn't the student council have taken care of that in the past ten years by doing fundraisers or something?

They probably used what they had for the 5 year, and who has time to get together and try to raise more? At least that's how things went at my HS.

What student council? When you graduate, all that is gone. Who says the members of the old student council will be around? I missed my 5th ..in Japan, my 10th,...in Sardinia, my 20th...in Israel. I was finally here in the states for my 30th, and there was a $50 charge for each person. (Missed my 40th) For what we got, that was pretty good and reasonable...for a class of 164 with not 1/2 attending. Some are dead, many we have no idea where they are. I was thought to be dead because someone with the same name (18 years older) in a town 8 miles away died. Since I hadn't been to the other reunions...well, I can understand why they thought I was dead.
Fund raising? Would YOU have gotten involved if you lived across the country? Why should a handful be responsible for raising the money?

Yes, it is normal to split the cost of the reunion amongst the attendees. I think that is fair, we're all grown ups and should pay our way.
No, the student council should raise money for the needs of the current students. After all, the whole point of school is educating the kids, not funding parties for old geezers to come back and reminisce.

everyone pays a place per plate or per head is what i have always had. I never know any class reunion being free.
