I had the same thing.
The operation went on for about 30 minutes, I don't know why, but they were snipping little bits at a time.
You will have a local anasthetic. You have to remember, 'in the round' it leaves quite a big wound in a very sensitive area.
Then they got to put in stitches, so you gonna look a bit like Frankenstein for a while.
Mine wouldn't stop bleeding for an hour, so they made me sit in a cubicle and squeeze it until it did stop. That also hurt.
They won't let you go until it has stopped bleeding and you have passed water.
The pain afterwards wasn't too bad so long as you aren't moving about,(few days) but it is so strange not having a foreskin as the sensitive 'head' is in direct contact with your clothing. Don't worry the sensitivity will drop off and the 'glans' will toughen up a bit.
The stitches take a while to dissolve.
Don't try having sex (even with your hand) until the pain has completely gone and the skin has fully joined up again.
Book a week off work at least.
Masturbation was no problem after healing.
If there is a reduction in sensitivity it is only minute.
Girls like it because it is cleaner.
DO NOT GET AN INFECTION !!!

I am in my early 50's and had this done as I was regularly began developing infections, even though regular hygiene remained good. I guess my physiology is changing with age. Now, I feel a part of the "norm" and not such an oddity. The urologist said it was a lose cut circumcision where the skin isn't pulled back real tightly. I was admitted to the hospital for a couple of hours. However, the procedure actually took under an hour. There doesn't seem to be much loss of any sensation (which I had some fears). I still felt the urge to pull the skin back when urinating (phantom sensations?). I did use quite a considerable amount of ice pack for the first 5-6 days, as it was painful to move around, but certainly tolerable. After a month, sexual activity could resume. It took a few months for the "scaring" ridge around the incision to subside and become flush with the surrounding skin.

It's not painful at all. You will have what can be best described as discomfort whilst healing up. In the UK you have the choice of general or local anaesthetic. Personally, I'd go with General. During the procedure the surgeon will place a penile block in which is a slug of local anaesthetic to prevent any pain when you come round, then all you'll need is basic painkillers. If you have phimosis depending on how bad it is circumcision might be avoidable. Any scarring or redness and swelling can be a sign of balanitis xerotica obliterans (BXO) and that can be difficult to put right without circumcision. Essentially scar tissue is difficult to stretch and more prone to splitting. Your last option is prepucioplasty where the foreskin is released surgically - this is less invasive but ultimately cosmetically poor and if you're scarred already pointless if you foreskin is healthy but tight this might be a better option

I'm not sure how long the procedure takes, probably around half an hour or so. The actual procedure itself shouldn't be painful since they'll give you a local anesthetic to numb the area. Recovery afterwards might suck a lot, as the glans (penis head) will feel oversensitive as it rubs against things and erections can pull on the stitches. But that's what painkillers are for.
However, you should know that there are lots of other ways to treat and cure phimosis. The first thing you should try are called stretching exercises. See link 1 for good and detailed instructions on what to do. You should do those exercises for a few minutes each day for a few weeks to a month, preferably right after a shower/bath when the foreskin's most flexible.
If after a month and there's little/no progress, then ask a doctor about certain prescription creams that'll help loosen the foreskin. In one study, these creams are the most cost-effective treatment a doctor can provide (link 2, names of creams in one of the tables). Be aware that the cream(s) may take up a month or more to get the full effect, but you should be able to speed things up if you combine them with the stretching exercises.
In almost all cases of phimosis the above two treatments are all that's necessary. Very rarely will any kind of surgical intervention (i.e. circumcision) be needed. See links 3 and 4 for more info on phimosis. So if a circumcision isn't what you want, know that there are cheaper and less painful (if not painless) solutions.
Besides, if you can cure the phimosis without having your foreskin removed, there are good things about keeping your foreskin as long as it works (see remaining links). Good luck with whatever you decide.

I had the same problem as you and was circumcised 6 years ago aged 27. I don't recall the name of the surgeon. He was based in Harley Street but the operation was performed in Luton. I found him through this site: http://www.circumcisioncentre.co.uk/
The operation lasts about 30 mins. The administration of the anaesthetic was actually quite painful as injections were given just below the glans.
Anaesthetic is necessary but local not general. That numbed it and I was conscious during the operation but chose not to look at what was going on.
The pain kicked in when the dressing was applied as it was tight (to prevent bruising) and the anti-septic felt like fire! I was ok to catch a train hope but rested thereafter.
The dressing stayed on for a week and wasn't at all very comfortable, you'll need some time off work to recuperate. Nocturnal erections hurt and I found cans of aerosol stayed cold enough to cool things down.
When the dressing was removed the discomfort subsided a lot and diminished as I started bathing it daily. The stiches fell out after a few days and I healed very quickly.
I had to go back to have the frenulum removed as it remained very tight after the circumcision but it was no bother at all.
I had all of the foreskin removed so that my glans are exposed when flaccid. This is known as a tight circumcision, but you could opt to have less foreskin removed: http://www.circlist.com/styles/style.html
Some posters have mentioned the decrease in sensitivity. This does occur, but not to the extent of some of the testimonies I have read. I think this must be due to drier climates than the damp weather we're used to in the UK or the fact that these guys are masturbating dry, which can only make the skin tougher. When lubricated the sensation is all there.
I've had no problems since being circumcised and much prefer being that way, as the tip of my foreskin used to suffer tiny lesions after sex which was painful thereafter.
Circumcision is not the only remedy for phimosis as some people have stated above you should think carefully and only opt for it if it's what you really want.

I had that exact problem, boy do I feel sorry for you.
The actual circumcision itself only takes about 15 minutes. I was meant to have it done under a general anasthetic but my blood pressure at the time was far too high for the aneathstatist to take the risk. (cant think why it was so high....)
I ended up having it done under a local anasthetic.
Honestly, there was no real pain afterwards, just a dull ache. Be prepared for a bit of blood in your pants for a few days.
Take about a week off work and give yourself a chance to heal.

Some may say that circumcision will fix it, but circumcision's risks include reduction in sensitivity and pleasure, and making masturbation more difficult according to studies (including a few new ones from a few months ago). Oddly enough that's how it was promoted in the USA since masturbation was bad, haha. There's a reason why the USA is the last remaining advanced nation still doing it, and even so, it's getting a lot less popular (it's now as low as 14% in some states). Save that as a last resort, as you're doing. That's only one of the few risks, there's more listed here, in addition to the studies and statistics:
http://forums.govteen.com/showpost.php?p=3069995&postcount=2
I was the same when I was younger, and now it slides fine with no problems whatsoever. Just pull back your foreskin when you shower the most you can without forcing it, and rub the head. That should encourage it to separate from the head. This is probably all you have to do, since this is common especially with teens. You just haven't 'used' it enough, as in masturbation and washing it. The same goes for sensitivity; the more your rub it the less sensitive it'll get (start using water when you shower then rub a little more each day).
And if its rather tight, you can get a cream that works in almost 95% of cases. It's 0.05% betamethasone or betamethasone dipropionate. And unlike circumcision it is very cheap ($12 in the USA), painless, and you don't risk decreasing sensitivity/pleasure and making masturbation more difficult. Here's the study that you can even print and give to the doctor:
http://www.scielo.br/scielo.php?pid=S1677-55382005000400012&script=sci_arttext&tlng=en
http://www.drugstore.com/pharmacy/prices/drugprice.asp?ndc=00168005546&trx=1Z5006
Try that cream. It works. Doctors often just mention circumcision since its a surgery that brings a lot of money to them, especially in the USA.
If you have questions, e-mail me from my profile since I've gone through this. I'll be happy to answer any questions.

I had it done at 47 under general anaesthetic. It took about 45 minutes then woke up stitched with 27 fine stitches. Surprisingly very little pain. There were some sensitivity of the glans when rubbed in my pants but disappeared very soon. I recommend you take three days sick leave. No sex (including masturbation) for four weeks. Good luck. You took the right choice. Most physicians and their sons I know are circumcised. There must be a reason.
