We have 3 goldfish and on the food container, it says to feed the fish a penny-sized pinch of food several times a day. We do that, but they always seem to look so hungry and start swimming near the edge of the tank whenever they see someone pass by. I would like to know if the fish could be overfed or if it is safe to feed them very often throughout the day??

Feeding your goldfish too much could be fatal. Goldfish need only be fed as much food as they can consume in one to two minutes, and no more than twice a day. In general, it's much easier to overfeed a goldfish then to underfeed one.

An interesting question... Let's apply some logic and common sense. Who monitors a fishes diet and food consumption in the wild? Some someone run around making sure a goldfish only eats a certain amount and only at certain times? No... Interesting how that can work in nature for millennia, but not in a tank. A fish will not eat until it gets sick, it has evolved beyond that point. If a fish could eat until it died and was genetically unable to stop when it was full, it would die in the wild and the species would no longer exist.

Now, that said, you can over feed from certain foods. It your fish food is too high in fats for example, too much can lead to liver problems. Too much oil will lead to a fatty tissue build up that causes health problems. Too much sugar, well, any sugar is too much sugar, goldfish need no sugars in their diet. So from that aspect, moderation and a varied diet are in order. All it can eat twice a day is fine, once from a quality goldfish pellet or flake and once from another food source.

Yes, absolutely! You can overfeed any fish, but especially goldfish because of their internal structure. Goldies are not like any other fish (well, except koi). Being a keeper and admirer of goldies for a couple of decades, I personally think "several times a day" is waaaaay too much, even if you only feed a tiny pinch each time, and a "penny-size pinch" is gigantic! Please don't feed goldies very often throughout the day. Once a day is all you need to feed goldies and the amount you feed, penny-size, dime-size or pea-size is not as important as what they eat in about 5 minutes' time. After that time, remove all uneaten food. And even an ocassional fasting of a day or two is very good for goldies.

yes you can feed them too much, fish will always eat if the food is available. I feed my fish which include goldfish just three times a day. You can always read the directions on the back of the food container.

All fish can be overfed. Goldfish are notorious beggars and will eat until they get sick. Just continue following the instructions on the package, and you will be fine.

Goldfish actually have quite advanced memories. This is how they associate humans with food.

Yes, you can defiantely overfeed your fish
Only feed them what they will eat in a period of 3-5 min at each feeding, twice a day about the same time

If you overfeed them they can get sick, especially with constipation

Hope that helps
Good luck

Yes you can overfeed goldfish. Never feed them more than they can eat in 2 minutes, and don't feed them more than twice a day. Goldfish actually don't know when to stop eating, and they'll eat until they explode (liiterally).
