I enjoy sitting outside and watching nature. I don't watch televison that much and I've enjoyed Yahoo Q&A for a few days because I like hearing what other people have to say. True Short Story: I love to collect artifacts such as grinding stones and arrowtips, so I went to a large freshly plowed field alone and it was located way back in the woods. I heard all sorts of birds and animals sounds and I smelled the musty order of a bear. Suddenly, it became extremely cloudy and the whole area became silent. Well, I didn't pay attention to the silence and the next thing I know, I saw lightening, heard thunder, and the wind almost blew me away, a tornado was upon me and I didn't have anyplace to run. From that day to this, I have learned how to pay attention and listen to the animals especially when nature becomes silent.

your own experience gives you the answer. what nature can teach you in moments no amount of TV, books or tales can emulate the treasure of knowledge nature can bestow on you in a few moments. good to know that there are still some folks who want to be one with nature and stand out from the rest who only exploit nature without realizing that they are in fact laying the foundation(in some cases it has already been done) for poisoning their descendants.

If you want life to be interesting and full you have to be invloved with your surroundings and use the tools provided you for learning about faraway places and things. I'd say the answer to your question is both. Television is a good source for learning and becoming informed about things that are not in your vicinity.. the study of history is possible through written text and the discovery of reality is being a part of your accessable invironment. I lived in the country, herded cattle, rode horses.. hunted squirrels, fished and grew vegitables.. I have watched wild animals run down my drive way and observed them in the forrest.. gathered a few artifacts from days gone by and collected a few beautiful pebbles.. felt the wind in my face, the rain on my body, and the sun on my back.. Uh and I have also run for cover from a wicked storm at the same time being impressed with its awsome power.. I not only listen to the animals.. but also my own innerself..I believe we are our own invironment..what we see and learn comes from the other invironments we have the good fortune to pass through in reality or learn about in some other way.

Spirit Dancer-what a great post.
Although technically you can learn things from television (I mean the History Channel, etc.), it is very unreliable, as most television is garbage through and through.
Watching nature not only teaches us about the world we live in, it allows us to commune with God without the help of the Xtian Taliban and their foolish ideas about humanity and salvation.
I once was in a field one September night filled with wild, circling thunder storms. I remember hearing a noise I had never heard before-suddenly I was in the presence of a wall of water raining down right in front of me. I was dry, but I could feel the droplets and smell the wonderful smell. I was so grateful to God for showing me such a wondrous thing, for giving me such a lovely gift.
Great post. I hope before I die to see the Aurora Borealis in Alaska, with all its otherwordly splendor. Keep watching and learning about these priceless things.

That is amazing. And I have to say I learn more when i'm outside with nature. Just feeling the wind brushing against my cheeks and listening to the surrounding. I am more of a dreamer, though... when i'm with nature, it's hard for me to keep my mind on one thing, it just drifts away. The ocean is an awesome place as well, I usually sit on the beach and cast my worries away. If only I could swim, haha. What you experienced is truly magnificent, and i'm simply happy you decided to share it with us. You have a good day, take care, Spirit Dancer :-)

Amazing question. I learn more from being outside...whether it is learning how acorn caps foretell of the coming severity of winter, noticing that water mocassins have a unique smell, and birds flying from a field indicate another animal, or that lack of a freeze in the south means we're going to have a bug overload in the summer. I also learn from watching people. Observation is our greatest gift...or rather the ability to put what we observe into understanding.

I learn more from watching television documentaries on the subject. However, I enjoy it more by being there in person. There really is no substitute for experience. It doesn't matter if you are learning or not, what matters is the memories which stay with you for a lifetime.
