I'm 23 & have been out of high school for 5 years now.. but I'm starting back this fall to be a RN. I have some pre-req's ot get out of the way this semester before I start nursing school.. but here's my question.. I've been out for so long, & I've never been to college so I'm not sure how this all works.. What all supplies do I need? What do I bring with me the first day? What kind of clothes do I wear.. I know that's silly.. but is it like high school when everyone is wearing everything new? What will my first day be like? Just mainly taking notes? Please help me...

Just bring a pen & notebook, your books, & your bookbag.. I know you will be nervous, but everyone else feels the same way you do.. Just wear what you feel comfortable in.. if that may be jeans, sweats... whatever.. Just relax & enjoy making a great choice in life.. you're gonna love it!

The great thing about college is its absolutely nothing like high school. The first day just bring a notebook and a pen. You don't need to wear new clothes, wear whatever you want. Each class will give you a syllabus and tell you what to expect in the class. You should already know what books you will need by then too. You won't really be taking notes until the second or third day. The first day is just an intro basically. Don't worry so much about it. I pretty much did what you did too. Just take a deep breath, tell yourself you can do it, and go for it. Good luck!

Here are some supplies you might need, depending on your preferences:

-textbooks specified by your professors (usually carried at the school's bookstore)
-black ink pens and some pencils
-highlighters
-sticky notes (for making notes in your textbooks, unless you want to write right in the book)
-college ruled notebooks of whatever size you prefer, one per class
-a daily agenda or calendar organizer book to keep track of assignments
-a laptop, computer, or access to one of these with Microsoft Works (excel, word, powerpoint, email)
-a student ID, if provided by your university
-a parking pass for your university (if applicable)
-3 ring binders for keeping handouts from class, plus a hole puncher if you don't have one
-a stapler, if you don't have one
-a printer, or access to one, for use with the computer

On the first day of classes you won't need to bring with you much more than a notebook and a pen. You will get a syllabus that outlines what work will be due when and what is expected of you by the professor. Not much work actually gets done in the first class of the semester; it's mostly introductions.

As for what you should wear, I've noticed that some nursing programs require you to purchase scrubs for use in classes and labs. Check with your professors to see if this is needed. If not... wear whatever you are comfortable in! There is no dress code.... be as laid back or dressed up as you want. I'm sure you'll find as the semester goes on that what you wear to class is not nearly as important as actually making it to class!

Good luck!

Dress casual. Pen and notebook will do for first day. If you have your book bring it because sometime you need it on the first day so you never know. If you dont have it by the first day it's usually not a big deal. On the first day you will get the syllabus. The instructor might want to get some contact info from you. Other instructors will start teaching.

Casual clothes, but nice. Pen and paper to take notes with. The textbook. Are you supposed to go to the bookstore and buy the required texts before the first class?

Just contact your college and ask them. Really, who else would be better equipped to answer your questions?

What clothes to wear? Wear what's comfortable. Period. Unlike high school sensibilities, college is NOT a fashion show. "Style" is not what you're paying your tuition for, and not what you'll be putting your time in for. Concentrate on what's important.

If they haven't had one already, I would strongly recommend attending a new student orientation day. Not only can you get many of your questions answered by staff and current students, but you will also get to observe a bit of daily campus life. Best of luck in your endeavor!!
