Big Brother" is a fictional character in George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, the enigmatic dictator of Oceania, a totalitarian state taken to its utmost logical consequence. In the society that Orwell describes, everyone is under complete surveillance by the authorities, mainly by telescreens. The people are constantly reminded of this by the phrase "Big Brother is watching you", which is the core "truth" of the propaganda system in this state. The physical description of "Big Brother" is reminiscent of Joseph Stalin or Lord Kitchener.
For the first time, every houseguest will be entering the house and playing the game with a secret partner -- someone they know from the outside world. Friends, co-workers and significant others will play the Big Brother game as secret duos. The twist is that each secret team believes that they are the only pair in the house (pairings will be revealed to TV viewers during the first live broadcast on July 14). Each twosome knows that if they can keep their secret and end up being the last two people in the hous ge, the winner will win $1,000,000, the biggest cash prize in Big Brother history, with the second place finisher winning $250,000. If a twosome does not make it to the final two, the winner will win $500,000.

The TV show Big Brother has a US and a UK version. Basically it's a bunch of people living together in a house on a TV studio set.
They don't have telephones, television, radio, music, books or even pencils or paper. They have no contact with the outside world.
There are dozens of cameras pointed on them, capturing their every move. They wear microphones every waking moment.
They compete for power (Head of Household), nominate other house guests for eviction, and people get voted out week after week. The last two people to make it to the end, then compete for a lot of money (Half a million in the US show.)
Because they have no contact (except with the TV host of the show on occasion) and are very bored, they get on each other's nerves, make friends, sometimes get romantic with each other, are sometimes kind and sometimes cruel.
It's a very interesting social experiment

Big Brother is a reality television format. In each series, which lasts for around three months, a number of people (normally fewer than fifteen at any one time) live together full-time in a 'Big Brother House', isolated from the outside world but under the continuous gaze of television cameras. The houseguests try to win a cash prize by avoiding periodic, usually publicly-voted, evictions from the house. The 'real life soap', was invented by the Dutchman John de Mol and developed by his production company, Endemol. It has been a prime-time hit in almost 70 different countries. The show's name comes from George Orwell's 1949 novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, in which Big Brother is the all-seeing leader of the dystopian Oceania.

OMG- I am so hooked. There are these people locked in a house together. They have a head of household that nominates 2 each week to go home. There are competitions to win food rewards and to win the Power of Veto which can change said nominations. Every Thursday some one is voted out. The winner is whomever is left in the end. If you think you are a voyeur...this is a show to watch.

Big Brother is a reference to George Orwell's book 1984. It is referring to the control that the government has over the people and how much they invade citizens' privacy. This book coined the term "Big Brother is watching..."

They put a group of peole in a house and they live together for about 12 weeks. Each week the housemates choose who they want to put up for 'eviction' and the 2 housemates that are nominated get put up for public vote, and the public call to vote who they want to get kicked out of the house. They get given tasks, such as silly things like having to pretend they are in a talent show like american idol, and if they pass the tasks, they are given a luxery shopping budget, and if they fail they are given little money. The winner of the whole show gets £100, 000.
