The audience is tricked by these characters being different intellectually and physically.

I think the grammar is correct but, when saying it aloud, it sounded a bit awkward to me. Also, if it is not the audience doing the tricking, you should identify who is doing that, for instance if "John" is the writer...

I would try: "The audience is tricked not only by John making these characters intulectually different but physically also."

Try using more active language:

The characters intellectual and physical differences tricked the audience.

-or-

You can use something like:

The author's keen ability to make the characters different intellectually as well as physically definitely tricked the audience.

***Both of those sentences use active instead of passive language. When writing, you want to attempt as much as possible to avoid linking verbs like "am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been" etc. because they don't give writing much of a voice.

For instance, take a look at these pairs of sentences:

The boy was bitten by the dog. (passive)
The dog bit the boy. (active)

Your car has been damaged by me. (passive)
I damaged your car. (active)

That game is being played by most of my friends. (passive)
Most of my friends play that game. (active)

See the difference? Active language can also save you a lot of extra words.
