making prisons private would mean tougher envoirments for inmates due to the private secter wanting to keep cost down, that would eliminate softy softy approaches to violent inmates like Ian Huntly and Co and make prisons a punishment again!

SIMPLIFY, knowing all this info about prisons, wouldn't that stop you commiting crimes for fear ofgoing back to prison, I know that I would be scared to death of spending anytime in prison. therefore they would act as a preventative to anyone thinking of commiting a crimeof any kind!

Having visited many prisons both private and state I assure you that private ones are a softer if anything and the treatment of prisoners is not dictated by companies. The companies running prisons have to adhere to Home Office rules and directives.

I agree with Nagato, this is the type of sick environment that the sadists within the prison system desire... If they wanted to stop this from happening, it wouldn't be that hard... Prison reform is desperately needed, unfortunately, it's like 150th on the list of things that we're in desperate need of... And to all these people who say "it's prison, not a hotel"... Please remember, 90% of these people will be released back into society, so it is in our own best interest to rehabilitate them as best we can, and I don't think that getting raped is very good for a psyche that is likely already damaged... But more than that, it is an issue of morality... Just because these people are in prison, does not mean that they are not human... And just because they did something wrong, does not mean that we should lower our own moral standards and just accept that people are being raped and/or tortured in our prisons... Prison should in no way be an enjoyable experience, but right is still right, and wrong is still wrong...

Prisons shouldn't be private because the punishment aspect of our justice system is supposed to rehabilitate a criminal. You know, make them not have the incentive to do the crime again. People would be treated less fairly if prisons were privatized. Their operations would not be open to public scrutiny as they currently are.
The other thing that bothers me about privatizing these government services, is that your taxes do NOT go down then they farm these things out to the lowest bidder. More often than not, the contractor gets in because of his or her low bid. They get a multi-year contract, and each year that the contract is renewed the contractor negotiates with government to get higher and higher compensation for what they are doing. Before you know it, the taxpayers are paying far more than they would be, had they kept the contracted service in the public sector. The other thing is that corporations cannot compete with government, because corporations only aim is to make money. Corporations have to pay CEOs, and give them their boats, planes, and limousines. Not to mention their stock options, and platinum parachute when they decide to moce on to the next sucker. These things are not cheap. When the Public Sector does these things, they don't have to pay CEOs their multi-millions, and their operations are out in the open, for all, who desire to, see.
Privatization of government services is the real reason that you are paying too much in taxes. Turn those services over to the public sector, and I guarantee that within only a few years, they would cost less.

They privatised the rail network and look what happen. So I'm really not sure. Why not put the likes of Ian Huntly on an island off the cost of Scotland and leave them to rot......why spend money on them at all (a very small island without women we do want them breeding women prisoners can have their own island).

When inmates are released, as most will be, we will be safer if they have been treated humanly and provided programs for learning life and job skills.
Think about how junk yard dogs are treated and trained, compared to the treatment of family pets. The goal of private prisons is to make money for the owners, not for rehabilitation. Of course, many argue that the purpose of the present unreasonably long sentences and high incarceration rate is to make money for lawyers, guards, and others in the prison industry.
Private prisons might be acceptable if
the mentally ill were not subjected to them,
their profit depended on a percent of inmates becoming responsible citizens once they are released,
and if news reporters could interview the incarcerated.
Presently, that is not allowed in California and a lot of horror is hidden from the public.

Makes as much sense for me as entering into a contract with the Russian Federation to do all of ourn prison services. I think they can care for our prisoners at a lower price than we can. Granted, conditions are a bit more harsh, but we would save a lot of money.
