I don't know that I would say they are helping themselves. However they are definitely NOT doing anything to seriously assist the black population of this country.
How come Al Sharpton hasn't come out to condemn the girl who falsely accused the white Duke lacrosse players of rape for being racist? He only harps on white folks. He does not hold his own people accountable for their actions.
I agree that they are both just media whores. But then again...aren't most politicians?

They're helping themselves. In my opinion, they're just a couple of media whores.
EDIT: Dude below- Yes, politicians are media whores. But the question wasn't about politicians. Therefore I answered only concerning Sharpton and Jackson.

in my opinion they are racist against white people.
They make it seem like black people can never be racist but hell yeah they can.
So they are helping themselves.
