"I'll not bother to debate each item you have dead wrong on each item. See the movie and then you will have an informed judgment in order to have a conversation about the subject."
Do we have more to gain by shutting down debate from people we disagree with, or do the people deserve to hear both sides?

Chreddon>The only point in the video I rejected was that we go to war for oil. The rest, I had some thoughts about electric cars that I shared that didnt pertain to the movie. So we werent talking about the video, we were talking about electric cars. But because Im conservative, apparently Im not allowed to talk about anything that was of the same subject of any lib film.

So once again the answer is no. You libs are quite deserving of these labels you have earned.

If the Liberals liked debate they would answer the questions head on but instead we get propaganda, talking points and B.S. in general. Only on those rare occasions do I get a good answer out of them.

The problem I see with presidential debates is that when the representatives of each candidate meet to discuss the rules of the debate the entire thing gets watered down to the point where it is an exercise in futility. They are a waste of time and serve no purpose. Now if an open debate were to be allowed then we would have something worth while. I haven't seen a debate where a candidate from either party answered a question with a direct and concise answer. All the issues get sidesteped and double talked to death. I haven't witnessed a single candidate today who has any integrity or sincerity. The only thing they seem to be passionate about is getting elected.

I think debate is healthy when you have two people debating issues, using facts to support their cases, and avoiding bashing personalities and stereotypical generalizations. It's just so hard to find people who really want to debate that way.
Most people don't want to debate, they want to ARGUE, which is not the same thing at all.
Now, as to your case, it looks as though the 'debate' is about some movie (Sicko, perhaps?) and your family member has seen it and you have not, but you are 'debating' it. I think your family member is correct in stating that you should not attempt to debate the content of the movie until you have seen it and have a basis for your stand, or at least know what it is you are against. Too often in today's political morass, we debate (or more likely, argue) about things that we have made no steps to inform ourselves about.
So, go see the movie, then start the debate again and see if your family member will continue.

Look at the answers from Republicans on this topic and you'll quickly find your answer. Do you think they actually want to debate? I think they just want to have their way, and when someone offers a different, contrary point of view, Republicans immediately start name-calling (terrorist, communist, etc). How or why would you want to debate with someone like that?
Edit~
The reason debate was shut down was because you had an uninformed opinion. What's the point in debating if the person you're debating has no idea what you're talking about?
Edit 2~
You hadn't seen the movie, right?
Oh, and thanks for proving my original point with your "typical lib" comment. What's the point in debating someone who doesn't listen?

Sure it is, but if you are referring to the crap that is masquerading as political debate these days? I'd rather not see it.
The fact that both political parties shun what they consider to be the "biased" portion of the media and only appear on the media programs that already support their own views means that neither of them really want to have difficult questions asked of them.
But I'm going to go out on a limb a bit here and say that there is only one mainstream media outlet on the US airwaves that is completely and uncurably biased, and that is Fox News. Don't even go there. You might think that MSNBC, the networks and CNN have a liberal bias, but you'd be lying. But that is what I come to expect from Republicans. Lies.

Free speech and debate.
I'm glad you added the part about stereotyping. You would do even better by leaving out the lib part and pointing out the behavior, without the label.
Each of us will look at it, say, "That's not me, that's the other side," and more of us will avoid it.
I'm an old-style democratic party member. NO political bigotry, patriot first, free speech, free expression, equality (even for republicans).
You'll find there are lot's of us. People you thought were so reasonable and wise and informed until they tell you they are democrats. For many years, I was one of the seditious left. One day I woke up and decided my country came first, not my need to insult our reps.
I stopped selling myself cheaply. Held myself to a higher standard. Got better at patriotic and legal protest as well!
Keep speaking up, regardless, everyone.

You're stereotyping. In my family, it's usually my conservative mother who shuts down debate when presented with evidence that her positions are wrong. I'm sure it happens with both sides, but it isn't the norm for either, just for the extremists.

Since you seem to have a bug up your butt about liberals, I would say you're probably stereotyping. You haven't really presented any evidence to the contrary, but I'm willing to listen.
