A hyphenated name is really two names (first or last), joined by a hyphen, or dash, in the middle. Some people, especially couples who aren't married, or who are married but the woman kept her maiden name, give their kids hyphenated last names (Courtney Thorne-Smith, etc.) Sometimes, they do first names as hyphenated (like Mary-Kate Olsen) so people will know that their first and middle names are supposed to always go together.

well a hyphen is a dash, like so: "-". So a hyphenated name could be: Mary-Elizabeth, Jean-Louise, Mary-lea, mark-emmanuel etc.
