JFK is often praised for his handling of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Did he actually cause the crisis? His botched Bay of Pigs invasion gave Cuba the justification to ask for missiles to protect themselves from invasion. For that matter, his decision to put Bobby in charge of the invasion helped it's failure, especially when Bobby ordered the supporting air strikes at the wrong time, and general uncertainty and incompetence. By scaling back the CIA's original plan, Kennedy left just enough of the plan intact to ensure failure. That failure led directly to the famed "Missiles of October".

On close examination of JFK's presidency, it was not very successful. He was just prettier than LBJ.

JFK definitely had a hand in the events that led up to the Cuban Missile Crisis, but you make it sound as if he alone caused it. That would not be a fair or balanced assessment. For that matter, you could blame Eisenhower, Castro, Krushchev, or the New York Times. They all played major parts as well.
