Will doing so give my laptop (which is running off wireless internet) and my wired desktop access to the printer.

Hello, yes you can. I have a non wireless Netgear USB Print Server that I connect to my router. One side of the server is USB that connects to my printer and the other side of the server connects to my router with an Ethernet cable RJ-45. You do have to be careful though because some print servers are not able to handle bi-directional printers (all-in-one). You will need to download your printers driver on your laptop as well. If you are using Microsoft then you can use the network wizard setup to help you configure this. See ya!

No need to buy any more hardware. All you have to do is to share the printer on your wired computer, then install the printer on your wireless laptop. This is the setup that I have at my house.

It would be easier to connect the printer to the desktop and use printer sharing.

I haven't had good luck with home quality print servers, I gave up and went to printer sharing.

If you're connecting by wire, turn off wireless. Trying to use both at the same time can really mess things up for all of you. If your wireless adapter is off, connecting to the router by wire won't change their wireless signal strength (unless you wrapped the wire around the antenna), but if you're gaming or downloading large files it could slow them down.

that will work... but you also have the option of buying a printer that has an Ethernet hook up right on it.
