Well let's see

1) The Soviet Union was dirt poor and could barely support its citizens at the end.
2.) Republics within the Soviet Union were starting to break away from it and becoming capitalist the biggest eg was Lithuania - (you didn't see any U.S. states become communist)
3.) The Berlin wall fell and Germany was reunited and the country followed US capitalism not Soviet communism.
4.) Gorbachez, the party leader, was threatened by Communist hardliners after he introduced more and more capitalist ideas - instead of crushing him and appointing a new leader the communists were defeated.
5.) The Soviet Union could not control its internal countries. Russia itself declared itself free of the Soviet Union (Boris Yeltsin on a tank)

Some would say that this was because that the Soviets just could not keep up with the US. The US was booming in the eighties and spent billions on defense. The Soviets tried to follow suit, but there system just was not effective enough to keep up in the arms race. As such this caused the problem of breakaway republics who wanted to stop building up arms andinstead bring more creature comforts - like cars and tvs instead of tanks and radar screens.

Because, in fact, the U.S. did win the Cold War. (Why could it be said that Britain won the Napoleonic Wars?)

The collapse of the Soviet Union and the failure of world communism in general while the U.S. economy thrived is proof positive that the U.S. dominated the Cold War and capitalism works.

The US lead the free world into the "New World Order".

In the 1960's the US got the title of "Leader of the Free World " where the Soviet Union was leader of the other guys as the US lead the West it can be said that the US won the Cold War.

Because the Soviet Union dumped communism (which was what America was concerned about), became the Russian Confederation. The USSR changed the way America wanted it to but America didn't change, therefore you can say that the U.S. won it.

If you see the Cold War as a conflict between the USA and the USSR, one simple answer is that the USA won because it still exists, while the USSR does not.

IF we "won" it, we did it by "default". I think it can be more accurately stated- that the Soviets LOST it. They just couldn't maintain it anymore.
